Betty agrees to an engagement arranged by her father, Periklis, with Kostas, a diligent and kind employee at Periklis’s electrical‑appliance shop. Periklis respects Kostas and hopes to make him his son‑in‑law. When Kostas rescues Mary, a fragile young woman who attempted suicide after being abandoned by her English lover, he is later asked to pose as a wealthy English gentleman to assist Mary in confronting her father, Kyriakos, who is pressing her to accept an unwanted marriage.
