Griff the Invisible

As Griff, portrayed by Ryan Kwanten, trudges through his monotonous office existence, he endures the relentless torment of his coworker Tony, which steadily chips away at his spirit. However, as night falls, Griff sheds his mundane shell, transforming into a superhero with boundless enthusiasm, seeking solace and purpose in his alter ego. Visits from his brother Tim, played by Marshall Napier, provide a brief escape from his drudgery. During these encounters, Tim introduces Griff to Melody, a whimsical soul brought to life by Maeve Dermody. Melody’s world is a vibrant tapestry of eccentric ideas and a profound aversion to the outside realm, capturing Griff’s attention and slowly fostering an unexpected friendship filled with delightful quirks.

As Griff grapples with his deep-seated insecurities, the weight of workplace bullying begins to overwhelm him, prompting a desperate desire for invisibility. With Melody’s father’s shop as his workshop, Griff embarks on a quest to build a suit that will grant him the ability to slip through the shadows unnoticed. His inaugural venture in the suit is a thrilling success; however, it quickly takes a turn for the worse when his boss inadvertently captures his identity on camera, leading to shocking consequences that ripple through Griff’s life. Despite Melody’s well-meaning attempts to uplift him, everything begins to spiral out of control.

As Griff’s perception of reality deteriorates, he becomes ensnared in a web woven by his imagination. His commitment to nightly superhero escapades grows increasingly elaborate, yet it’s evident that they are mere figments of his fertile mind. When Tony escalates his harassment to physical violence, leaving Griff injured and demoralized, he finds himself couched in despair. After this harrowing encounter, the authorities release him with a caution, revealing the extent of his bruises — both physical and emotional.

Following this trauma, the foundations of Griff’s world start to fracture. Tim’s suggestion of a disastrous trip to an abandoned warehouse leads to a pivotal moment when Melody’s words about Griff’s fantastical tendencies strike a chord. Feeling exposed as a mere daydreamer, Griff’s heart shatters under the weight of reality. The very fantasies that once provided him joy begin to crumble like sandcastles against the tide, leaving him with a haunting choice: to abandon the costume and erase every trace of his imaginative life, walking away from the only sanctuary he ever knew.

In a poignant turn of events, as night descends, Griff ventures to Melody’s home, where he is struck by the undeniable truth — his once-vibrant dreams feel faded and empty. Amidst this introspection, Melody pays him a visit, determined to untangle the confusion surrounding Griff’s abrupt desire to relinquish his superhero identity. Alone in his haven, Griff dons his steadfast invisible suit once more, ready to re-establish his bond with Melody. She, in turn, discovers a View-Master-esque device within the box, accompanied by Tim’s parting words: “Use these to be the sole observer of Griff’s invisible form - so he won’t have to wear the hat.”
