The film chronicles the three-decade saga of crime boss John Gotti, showcasing his ascension as the head of the Gambino Crime Family in New York City. Accompanying him are his son, John Jr., and his devoted wife, Victoria. At the heart of the narrative is a unique relationship between a father, who adhered strictly to the mob’s stringent codes, and a son driven by a desire to escape that life and reclaim the Gotti name in a quest for redemption.

This cinematic portrayal provides an unprecedented glimpse into the inner workings of the Gotti family, embroiled in a world fraught with danger, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption. John Gotti famously presided over the Gambino crime family, recognized as the most formidable and influential crime syndicate across the United States during its peak. Nicknamed the “Dapper Don,” his vibrant personality and glamorous flair propelled him into the spotlight as one of the most notorious mobsters of the 20th century. His reign continued unabated until his demise from cancer in 2002, while serving a life sentence behind bars.

In the 1980s, at just 24, John Jr. attained the esteemed status of a “made man,” formally integrating him into the Mafia and setting him on the path to inherit his father’s fleeting empire. The film highlights his experiences during his conscription in the U.S. Army, where the stigma of being Gotti’s son led to harsh treatment by his fellow soldiers. Reluctantly, he left the army to join his father’s criminal exploits.

Tragedy struck the family when Frankie, Gotti’s younger son, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident. In a swift act of retribution, the man responsible was abducted mere months after the incident, showcasing the family’s unforgiving nature.

Additionally, the film introduces Neil Dellacroce, the family attorney, who expressed a strong bond with Gotti. As Gotti navigated the treacherous waters of mob leadership, he found himself in conflict with Paul, the head of the Gambino family, whose leadership Gotti openly derided, much to Neil’s chagrin. The tension escalated as law enforcement began surveilling Angelo Ruggiero (Pruitt Taylor Vince), Gotti’s closest ally, who unwittingly exposed critical operations of the crime syndicate through wiretaps.

Amidst the chaos, Gotti devised a plan to eliminate Paul—an act that would solidify his control of the Gambino family. In a public display of brutality on December 16, 1985, Gotti ordered a hit, resulting in Paul’s assassination at a renowned steakhouse. This brazen act initiated a fierce war among rival families in New York, driving Gotti to make hard choices that led to significant losses, particularly the deaths of key associates like Frank.

By 1988, Gotti’s trust was severely tested as he faced betrayal from within, especially from Sammy Gravano, who later turned informant against him. After being recorded by the FBI admitting his role in illegal activities, Gotti received a harsh sentence of five life terms in prison.

Furthermore, the story continues with John Jr., who also found himself ensnared by the law as he was accused of being part of the syndicate. His father’s impending death prompted a heartfelt visit where John Jr. conveyed his decision to disengage from the criminal underworld. He sought to liberate himself from the cycle of crime, albeit under circumstances fraught with conflict and disapproval from his father. Following a series of legal battles and serving three prison sentences that totaled nine years, John Jr. finally emerged free in December 2009, marking the end of an era defined by crime and familial loyalty.
