Goodnight Mommy

The mother undergoes a significant cosmetic facial surgery, returning home with her head wrapped in bandages. This drastic change in her appearance is unsettling for her ten-year-old twin sons, Elias and Lukas, who are confused and disturbed by how she looks.

Upon returning home, the mother begins exhibiting increasingly strange behavior that alarms the twins. She ignores Lukas completely while engaging primarily with Elias, leading to feelings of anxiety and suspicion among the boys about their mother's identity.

The mother imposes a set of strict and chilling rules on the twins, forbidding them from opening the blinds during the day and enforcing silence within the house. Despite it being summer, she insists they only play outside, effectively isolating them further.

In an alarming shift from her previous behavior, the mother physically lashes out at Elias for being mischievous. This unexpected cruelty leaves the twins bewildered, as they recall their mother as someone who would never behave in such a violent manner.

The twins grow increasingly cautious about the woman's identity, suspecting that she may not be their real mother. Their suspicions deepen upon discovering an old photograph of their mother with another woman who resembles her closely.

Convinced that the woman is an impostor, Elias and Lukas take drastic action by tying her to a bed. They attempt to extract a confession from her, sealing her mouth with tape to prevent her from crying out for help.

As the twins engage in their increasingly dangerous game, two Red Cross employees arrive to collect donations. They wait for the mother to return home but leave after Elias secretly steals a large sum of money from her purse to offer to them.

Despite being tape-bound, the woman manages to remove the tape and attempts to call for help. However, the twins, realizing the urgency of their actions, seal her lips with Super Glue to further torture her, complicating her ability to escape.

After the woman urinates in bed, the twins briefly release her so she can use the restroom. However, this kindness is short-lived, as the boys have set a booby trap that knocks her unconscious as soon as she tries to escape.

In a desperate attempt to uncover the truth, Elias sets fire to the house, believing this will force the woman to confess her real identity. The woman claims she is their real mother, but Elias is torn between her words and his suspicions.

In the heat of the moment, the mother reveals that Lukas has died in an accident prior to the events of the film. She tries to convince Elias that his brother's death was not his fault, urging him to let go of the guilt that has been haunting him.

Elias, consumed by grief, speaks with an apparition of Lukas, who encourages him to light the curtain on fire. The mother, unable to see Lukas, is terrified and pleads for Elias to stop, but the situation spirals out of control.

The chaotic events lead to the mother being engulfed in flames. She tragically burns to death before the firefighters can arrive, leaving Elias to grapple with the horrifying outcome of his actions and the revelations about his family.

The film concludes with an ethereal scene where the mother is reunited with her sons in a cornfield, signifying a haunting connection that endures even after her tragic death. This visual echoes the themes of grief and the impact of unresolved trauma within the family.
