Good Neighbors

Louise, a waitress in a Montreal Chinese restaurant, becomes obsessed with a recent spate of murders and rapes in the NDG neighborhood. She pours over newspaper stories about each victim and starts to fear the world around her. The fascination shapes how she perceives people she encounters.

The latest victim is a coworker who had told Louise about meeting a blond, muscular man at the bar. Louise is questioned by police about her connection to the case. Victor, a newcomer, walks Louise home after she finishes her shift at midnight.

Spencer discloses to Victor that he was paralyzed in a car accident that killed his wife, revealing how private he keeps his pain. He later angrily resents when Victor installs a wheelchair-accessible ramp in the building. This friction hints at an unstable dynamic between the two men.

Victor, who has a crush on Louise, tells his brother that they are engaged in an imaginary romance. At a party, Victor's brother brings a cat from China named Balthazar, which Louise instantly adores. The cat becomes a symbol of Victor's growing attachment.

During the night, Spencer slips out through his window to enjoy the city's nightlife. He is later seen with a woman in a seemingly intimate situation, and in the morning Victor's friend spots him, casting doubt on his innocence.

In the morning, Victor dismisses the idea that Spencer could be the killer. Louise visits Victor's apartment to see his cat and to seek solace away from the mystery. The uneasy dynamic between the neighbors continues to simmer.

On Christmas morning, Valérie, their abusive Francophone neighbor, poisons Louise's cats. Louise increasingly spends time at Victor's place and prefers his cat to human company, deepening her isolation. This act heightens Louise's sense of vulnerability.

Louise uses sensationalist media reports to scheme against Valérie. She seduces Victor to obtain a semen sample, which she stores for later use. Afterward, she visits Spencer for a drink and flirts with him, continuing to manipulate both men.

Louise leaves work early, claiming illness, and begins to enact her revenge. She intends to use Victor's semen to imply that Valérie was raped as well as murdered, planting the evidence to fit a killer's profile. The plan marks a shift from plotting to acting.

Louise violates Valérie's corpse to plant Victor's semen, completing the setup to frame him as the killer. She returns home and unexpectedly crosses paths with Spencer, who has decided to go out. The tension between the trio deepens as the web of deception tightens.

Some officers question Louise again about the case. Spencer calls Louise to invite her for a drink and warns her not to reveal anything unnecessary. Louise remains wary but remains involved in the escalating scheme.

Victor confronts Louise about what he has told the police and outlines a plan to trap Spencer, believing he knows who the true killer might be. Louise has already implied an engagement, manipulating the investigation to her advantage. The tension between truth and manipulation escalates.

Spencer proposes a dinner party as part of a scheme to trap Victor, and later breaks into Victor's apartment, prompting the police to rush to the scene. Victor confronts Spencer on the fire escape, and a struggle ends with Spencer's fall. The confrontation leaves Victor in shock as the police prepare to intervene.

As Spencer bleeds in the snow, a police officer tells Victor to call 911 while the investigation closes in. Louise lets the cat out a window, enters Spencer's apartment, and climbs on top of his fish tank, signaling a final, chilling control over the situation. The film ends with Louise’s inscrutable calm as the fate of the other characters hangs in the balance.
