Read the complete plot breakdown of Golanthara Vartha (1993), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Rameshan Nair [Mammootty] runs a small provisional and grocery shop and is happily married to Lekha [Shobana], a school teacher. The entire village esteems him for his honesty, social work, and the courage to stand up against social injustice; even the local police grow weary of the way the people rally behind him. His life takes on a new challenge when he volunteers to transform a local goon, Karakuttil Dasan [Sreenivasan], hoping that guiding him toward responsibility might change more than just his habits.

A plan begins to take shape: Dasan’s potential marriage is proposed as a route to instill duty and steadiness in him. But the village’s elderly men, and Dasan himself, cast their eyes toward Rajani [Kanaka] as a possible wife for Dasan. Rameshan is opposed to this choice because Rajani has been publicly branded a prostitute after a hotel raid. The scandal snowballs into a social storm—the rumor spreads quickly, Rajani’s family disowns her, and she loses her job as a schoolteacher. Although the police later clear her name, the damage to her reputation lingers. Rameshan visits the police station to confirm her innocence and feels a heavy pang of guilt for the hurt caused by the misunderstanding. He trying to advocate for Rajani with her family and the school proves futile, leaving him with a difficult conscience.

To help Rajani rebuild her life, Rameshan turns to his friend Hassan, who suggests that Rajani could stay with Safiyatha until she finds another job. Safiyatha, however, insists that her guests must be married, which means Rameshan and Rajani must pretend to be husband and wife. At first, he resists this arrangement, but guilt over Rajani’s predicament and his sense of responsibility win out; he agrees, hoping the ruse will be temporary and that Rajani will move on once she is independent. He keeps his distance and guards his own wife, Lekha, from learning of the arrangement, fearing it would break their marriage if the truth came out.

Meanwhile, the village learns of what looks like an extramarital entanglement, and Lekha is deeply hurt, forced to confront her trust in the man she loves. Rajani eventually speaks to Lekha and lays bare the entire sequence of events, insisting that Lekha should be proud to have a husband who is genuinely devoted to their relationship and who loves Lekha deeply. Her testimony casts a new light on the competing loyalties, and the unspoken questions within Rameshan’s act of solidarity with Rajani.

The narrative unfolds within a close-knit community where the actions of respected elders and local figures shape every outcome. The cast includes Manju Pillai in a supporting role, and the village is also populated by characters such as Sulfath [KPAC Lalitha], Meenakshi Amma [Sukumari], Susheelan [Oduvil Unnikrishnan], Sahadevan [Bobby Kottarakkara], and the Panchayat President [Sankaradi], each contributing to the social texture that frames the central moral dilemma.

In the end, Rajani departs for the Middle East to pursue a fresh opportunity, while Rameshan remains by Lekha’s side, continuing their life together. The film leaves viewers with a quiet reflection on trust, forgiveness, and the choices people make when duty to others overlaps with personal happiness, underscored by the quiet resilience of a community that admires a man who tries to do the right thing—sometimes at great personal cost.
