Geng: The Adventure Begins

Badrol and Lim live in Kampung Durian Runtuh, where a string of durian disappearances sparks a local tale about a nocturnal creature that reportedly devours fruit yet leaves the shells clean. The village reels as a news segment interviews Tok Dalang about the mysterious event from the night before, and the locals dub the culprit the “durian ghost.” Skeptical but curious, Badrol convinces Lim to head to the village and uncover what’s really going on, hoping to separate superstition from fact.

Their journey begins with a broken bus ride that ends with a five-kilometer walk. After a few grumbles from Lim, a truck driver named Uncle Singh offers them a ride, despite his boss Pak Mail’s initial misgivings. Along the way, Badrol shares that Tok Dalang advised caution and hinted at an abandoned house tied to the mystery. The mood shifts when the pair reaches the village gate and is greeted by Upin and Ipin at Uncle Muthu’s outdoor restaurant; nearby, Opah, the kindly grandmother figure, tends to her tasks while Kak Ros keeps a close eye on the pastry shop. The village buzzes with rumors of the durian ghost, though Opah remains steadfast in her skepticism, chiding Ah Tong for dismissing the rumors as purely imaginary.

In the heart of the village, the kids’ world comes alive. Upin and Ipin welcome Badrol and Lim into their circle, and Kak Ros hovers with warm treats as the siblings shape a lively afternoon. But the calm is short-lived: Badrol and Lim are directed to Tok Dalang’s house, where the elder suggests they explore the countryside and its secrets. A playful motorcycle race ensues, during which Rajoo—Rajoo—is knocked aside, his one-horned cow Sapy Sapy toppled into the water, and an air of mischief grows into something more perilous as the group presses on.

That night, Tok Dalang spins a story about the Durian Ghost, while the youngsters, including Upin and Ipin, drift toward sleep. The next day’s plan takes them into the durian orchard, with Rajoo’s wagon carrying the makeshift expedition. A spontaneous musical number breaks out as the kids—joined by Kak Ros—fade into a sense of carefree adventure. The thrill deepens when they notice a fox-like creature named Oopet, who becomes a focal point of their journey. Oopet’s appearance leads to a night of camping and close calls, as a monstrous figure and a snake-like menace chase the group through a cave, followed by encounters with large leeches that test their resolve. Tok Dalang, Opah, Uncle Muthu, and Ah Tong race to find them, while Oopet reveals a surprising truth: he has been eating the durians in the orchard, a detail that reframes the mystery in a more personal light.

As the drama unfolds, Rajoo discovers that Uncle Singh and Pak Mail have more sinister plans for the orchard—plans that involve abducting Oopet’s mother’s kin. Badrol and Lim are kidnapped and taken to a cabin, but Rajoo’s stealth proves crucial: he sneaks in and helps orchestrate a rescue with the others. Oopet’s mother lashes out in defense of her son, attacking Pak Mail and Uncle Singh as the group makes a narrow escape. The chase to the cave resumes, and Oopet’s mother becomes a symbol of protection as they run for safety. In the end, the group—Upin, Ipin, Badrol, Lim, Kak Ros, Rajoo, and a wary Salleh—part ways with a sense of unity, finishing the day with a quiet sense of solidarity and a new, informal “gang” label bestowed by Lim, who hands Rajoo his CD player and marks the moment as a turning point for their friendship.

The film closes with a mid-credits scene that hints at larger consequences: Pak Mail and Mr. Singh drift through Oopet’s world, pursued by a creature that bears a striking resemblance to Oopet’s mother.
