Fruits Basket (2022) Spoiler-Free Summary – What It's About

In a quiet corner of Japan where everyday life quietly coexists with ancient magic, high school student Tohru Honda finds herself adrift after a family tragedy. With nowhere else to turn, she pitches a tent in the woods and begins a solitary life shaped by gentle resilience and an unwillingness to burden others. Her world, however, is about to expand in ways she never imagined when a chance discovery leads her to a charming house shared by two of her classmates.

That home belongs to the Sohma family, a household that appears ordinary on the surface but hides a remarkable secret. Several of its members carry a generational curse tied to the spirits of the Chinese zodiac, transforming into their animal counterparts in moments of vulnerability or when embraced by someone of the opposite sex. Among them is the popular Yuki Sohma, whose quiet elegance masks deeper wounds, and his cousin Shigure, a laid-back novelist whose warmth fills the house with an easy, welcoming atmosphere. Their relative Kyo, fiery and prideful, represents a unique exception to the zodiac order — the spirit of a cat excluded from the legendary circle, bound by a different and more painful set of rules.

When Tohru accidentally stumbles upon their secret, she is offered an unexpected place to stay and a promise to keep. What begins as a fragile arrangement gradually blossoms into something far more meaningful, as her unwavering kindness begins to ripple through the household in ways no one anticipated. Beneath the cozy rhythms of school days and shared meals, a much older and deeper history stirs — one that binds the Sohmas together while also holding them captive to spirits older than memory.
