Michael “Fresh,” a 12-year-old boy, leads a double life that starkly contrasts between the innocence of childhood and the harsh realities of drug dealing. Determined to survive in a world riddled with crime, he begins his day by visiting a latina woman’s apartment to collect dime bags of heroin before heading to school. When he realizes she has shortchanged him, he attempts to warn her that his boss, Esteban, will be angry. Disgusted by the track marks on her arm, a clear sign of addiction, he decides to leave.

As Fresh continues his day, he enters another apartment where a group is busy cutting crack. Here, he encounters Chilli](/actor/giancarlo-esposito), who belittles him for being just a child involved in adult dealings, and makes disrespectful remarks about Fresh’s sister. Angered and late for school, Fresh hurries away. Once in school, he is reprimanded by Mrs. Coleman for tardiness but manages to navigate his day as any normal boy would, engaging with friends like Chuckie and catching the attention of girls like Rosie, who finds him charming.

After school, Fresh visits a secret hiding spot deep in the woods to stash his accumulated earnings. Unfortunately, at his grandmother’s house, he is met with indifference from family members, save for a warning from a cousin about the risks of staying out late. The next morning, Fresh’s interactions take a darker turn when a pregnant woman approaches him begging for crack. Encountering desperation, he ultimately refuses her advances and stands firm against a similarly desperate drug addict.

Navigating this world isn’t easy for Fresh. After a chess match where he loses to his father, Sam, he finds solace in discussing his ambitions with Chuckie, who suggests entering their dog, Roscoe, into dogfights. Later, Fresh learns that Esteban is discontent with his dealings with other drug dealers and plans to mentor him, setting the stage for potential conflict and complications in Fresh’s life.

As tension escalates in his environment, Fresh devises a daring strategy to extricate himself and his sister, Nichole, from their perilous situation.
