Jon, an aspiring songwriter, finds himself on a beach where he stumbles upon a man attempting to drown himself. The incident leads to the man being hospitalized, setting off a chain of events that will change Jon's life.

While visiting the hospital, Jon meets Don, who manages a band called the Soronprfbs. Excited by the opportunity, Jon shares his keyboard skills and is invited to join the band that very night.

At Jon's initial concert with the Soronprfbs, he faces skepticism from the band members, except for Frank, the enigmatic leader who wears a mask. The performance goes smoothly until Clara, the theremin player, breaks her instrument and storms offstage.

After the concert, Jon is offered a full-time place in the band and accompanies them to an isolated cabin in Ireland. Here, they aim to spend the year recording their first album, but tensions begin to rise.

As recording progresses, Jon faces constant critique from Clara, who expresses her disdain for his musical talents. This ongoing tension creates an atmosphere of frustration within the band.

Jon confides in Don, who shares his own failed aspirations as a songwriter. Don stresses the unique qualities of Frank and warns Jon that he may never reach that level of creativity, deepening Jon's insecurities.

Everything spirals out of control when Jon discovers Frank's lifeless body hanging from a tree after a recording session. The shocking revelation leads to a realization that it was Don who had been wearing Frank's mask all along.

Despite the tragedy, Jon takes the initiative to upload their recording sessions online, which gains traction and results in an invitation to perform at South by Southwest. However, Clara is vehemently opposed to this idea.

Following an intense argument, Jon and Clara share a fleeting romantic moment, only for Clara to harshly reject Jon's advances, declaring him repugnant. Their relationship remains tense and strained as they grapple with fame.

Upon arriving in Austin, the band's expectations quickly crumble as they realize the audience is unfamiliar with their music. This reality sends Frank into a panic, prompting Clara to plead with Jon to prevent Frank from performing.

As the performance approaches, tensions escalate, leading to a dramatic confrontation where Clara stabs Jon in frustration before being apprehended. The incident forces the remaining band members to reassess their dynamic.

Despite the chaos, Jon announces it's the 'best day of his life' and begins to perform one of his songs. However, when Frank collapses from stress mid-performance, the situation becomes dire.

In the aftermath of the performance, Jon's search for Frank leads him to various places, ultimately leading to a bar where Clara and the others are now performing. He remains determined to mend the broken band.

Jon's journey culminates in Bluff, Kansas, where he learns from Frank's family that he grew up in a loving environment, contradicting Jon's previous beliefs about Frank's troubled past. This revelation shatters Jon's mythic view of artistic genius.

In an emotional encounter, Jon sees Frank without his mask for the first time, revealing a vulnerable man who has hidden his true self. Jon expresses his remorse and invites Frank back into the band, allowing him to reclaim his identity.
