Forrest Gump (1994) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained
Read the complete plot breakdown of Forrest Gump (1994), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens with a delicate feather floating down to the feet of Forrest Gump sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. As he picks up the feather, he carefully places it into the pages of Curious George and begins recounting his remarkable life story to a woman beside him. The bystanders at the bus stop shift frequently during his narration, displaying a spectrum of emotions from skepticism and indifference to sheer admiration.

From the start, Forrest’s life intertwines with that of a girl named Jenny. They meet on his first day of school, and Jenny’s journey evolves in tandem with Forrest’s. After overcoming his leg braces, Forrest showcases his extraordinary ability to run, which earns him a football scholarship to college. Upon graduating, he joins the army and finds himself in Vietnam, where he forms a close bond with a man named Bubba. Bubba persuades Forrest to partner in the shrimping business after the war concludes. In a twist of fate, while on patrol, their platoon comes under attack. Despite rescuing many comrades, Forrest suffers the heartbreak of losing Bubba. His profound bravery earns him the Congressional Medal of Honor.

During his recovery from a gunshot wound, Forrest uncovers an unexpected talent for ping-pong, which catapults him to fame as he competes against Chinese teams. At an anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., Forrest has a serendipitous reunion with Jenny, who has embraced the hippie lifestyle. Shortly after, Forrest shifts gears by endorsing a ping-pong paddle company, earning $25,000, which he uses to purchase a shrimping boat—a promise kept to Bubba. He is joined by his former commanding officer from Vietnam, Lieutenant Dan. Although their initial endeavors yield little success, fortune smiles upon them when Forrest’s boat becomes the lone survivor after Hurricane Carmen, leading to his bounty of shrimp and the expansion into a fleet.

Lieutenant Dan wisely invests their earnings in Apple Computer, ensuring Forrest’s financial stability for life. In a poignant moment, Forrest visits his mother in her final days. Jenny eventually returns to Forrest, and he proposes to her. She declines the offer but feels compelled to express her affection physically, leaving him the next morning. In an impulsive decision, Forrest embarks on a cross-country run that lasts three and a half years, achieving notoriety.

In the present, Forrest shares that he is at the bus stop because of a letter from Jenny, who watched him on television and wishes to reconnect. Upon their reunion, Forrest learns that Jenny has a young son, whom he discovers is his child. Jenny confides that she is ill, hinting at a possible virus, and together, they move back to Greenbow, Alabama. Eventually, Forrest and Jenny tie the knot, with Lieutenant Dan attending the wedding despite his new prosthetic legs and engaged status. Sadly, Jenny passes away soon after.

The film culminates with Forrest and his son waiting for the school bus on little Forrest’s first day of school. As his son opens the book, the same white feather from the film’s beginning emerges and gracefully drifts away, caught by a breeze as the bus departs.
