On Halloween night at a bustling carnival, siblings Scott and Abby step into a classic dark ride—the haunted house that is already preparing to shut its doors for good. The atmosphere is thick with dust and nostalgia as they ride, and the foreman of Ruthless Wreckers, Inc., I.M. Ruthless, Daniel Diker along with his wrecking crew and the ticket lady, explain that the spooky attraction will be demolished to make way for a flashy drive-through video arcade because, apparently, it isn’t scary enough anymore. As the train glides along the tracks, the car dips into the eerie world inside the house, where animatronic monsters, ghostly figures, and swooping bats drift past the windows while the car winds through sections named Frog Farm and The Bat’s Cave.

The journey continues into The Goblin’s Lair, where the pair encounters Gerbert Goblin, Daniel Diker, a goblin who, oddly, struggles to frighten anyone. After Gerbert tumbles backward from the window, Abby lends a hand and helps him back on his feet, yet the misstep causes them to miss the departing train. Now trapped inside the murky mansion, Scott and Abby tell Gerbert that the haunted house is set to be torn down to make room for the arcade. Gerbert reveals a crucial clue: the only monster who has ventured outside is M.G. Pumpkin, a rhyming, rap-speaking Jack O’Lantern-headed creature. The trio sets off to find him, but after wandering in circles they slip through a revolving bookshelf and tumble into a giant paper trick-or-treat bag, where M.G. Pumpkin greets them with candy and a rapid-fire rap about Esmerelda, a witch who runs the place, and that the annual Halloween Ball is tonight. He also hints that the house’s destruction is imminent, though he ignores the warning and urges them to enjoy themselves.

Back in the hallway, Scott taunts Gerbert as a joker, while Abby defends him and the goblin’s growing courage. Scott ultimately wanders off in search of an exit, leaving Abby to navigate danger with Gerbert. A hidden pit opens beneath Abby, revealing a giant snake at the bottom; Gerbert stretches out his arms in a brave save and pulls Abby to safety. Esmerelda watches the scene unfold in her crystal ball and spots Scott as he becomes separated from his sister, drifting toward a strange encounter with The Purple Glop, a blob-like entity that offers junk food and a small TV, luring Scott through a door with hypnotic songs about an imaginary candy stand.

Meanwhile, Abby and Gerbert find themselves imprisoned, and Gerbert blames himself for not being scary enough. Abby, with a chorus of tiny, friendly monsters, sings to him about the joy of being himself, and this hopeful moment gives Gerbert a new confidence. As soon as his self-belief solidifies, he discovers real fright, and together with Abby, he heads off to find Scott. Scott is eventually captured by Esmerelda herself and taken to her in a flash of black-and-white magic after a tense confrontation with The Purple Glop. Esmerelda’s hypnotic raps reveal her power and show a trophy-laden display, including a plaque bearing Scott’s name, before she turns him into a frog. But Scott manages to escape and reunites with Abby and Gerbert, and the three head toward the Halloween Ball.

At the Ball, Abby disguises herself as a ghost and Gerbert arrives wearing a goofy grin and a sense of purpose. The monsters cheer as Olly Overbite, a Dracula-like vampire, and Greta Gorgon, a reptilian gorgon, receive “Halloween Awards,” while Abby quietly nominates Gerbert as “The Scariest Monster.” Gerbert steps into the spotlight with a bold rap, declaring how terrifying he truly is while warning that I.M. Ruthless and his crew will tear down the haunted house at midnight to clear space for the video arcade. Esmerelda teleports into the hall, attempting to turn Gerbert into something else, but the tearing crew’s work outside is interrupted by the trio’s swift resistance. Gerbert rallies the other monsters and ghosts to defend their home, and they manage to scare off the wrecking crew, sending I.M. Ruthless and his people fleeing in fear after Gerbert rides off on a jackhammer that doubles as a pogo stick.

With the night saved, the monsters celebrate while Esmerelda restores Scott to his human form. As dawn breaks, Scott and Abby head home, and Scott gives one last Ribbit as a farewell to their unlikely rescuer. Gerbert, now celebrated as a hero, waves them goodbye just as the haunted house closes its doors for good.

Before the credits roll, Frankie the Frankenstein’s monster introduces the lineup of classic monsters—The Transylvanian Mummy, himself, The Wolfman, Olly Overbite, Greta Gorgon, The Purple Glop, M.G. Pumpkin, Esmerelda the Witch, and “The Star of tonight’s show, Gerbert Goblin!” The end-credits scene adds a final touch with Esmerelda singing, You Can Be What You Wanna Be.
