Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog

Thirteen-year-old Angus McCormick discovers a stray Yellow Labrador on his paper route near their British Columbia town. He quickly forms a bond with the dog and names him Yellow. The new companion becomes a fixture in Angus's life as he spends time with friends David and Sara.

Angus, his father John, and Yellow set out to travel along the coast of British Columbia. Turbulent waters capsize their boat, and John is rescued by a helicopter and taken to a hospital for minor injuries. Angus and Yellow are left stranded on the rugged coast far from civilization.

With John injured and evacuated, Angus and Yellow endure nine days on the shore, learning to survive with limited supplies. They search for food, shelter, and safety as the wilderness encroaches. Angus realizes they must reach civilization on their own.

Angus decides to trek toward civilization, guided by a lighthouse he spots about twenty miles to the south. He begins a long trek through one of British Columbia's vast wildernesses with Yellow by his side. The plan is to find help and reconnect with civilization.

Over the next several days, Angus grapples with hunger and the harsh terrain. He learns to read the land and improvise to keep both himself and Yellow fed and safe. The journey tests his endurance and determination.

One day, Angus tumbles down a cliff and breaks his left wrist. The injury makes progress painful and slow, but he presses on with Yellow's support. The setback highlights the danger of their isolation.

Later that day, Angus spots the lighthouse on a hill across a lake. He builds a raft and, with Yellow paddling beside him, reaches the opposite shore. The sight of civilization renews their resolve to press on.

They reach the lighthouse, but it is deserted with no food or supplies. Undeterred, Angus discovers a logging road running down another hill and decides to head there in hopes of finding help. The pair continue their trek into the unknown.

Their path leads to a narrow gorge with a river below. Angus places a fallen tree across the top of the gorge to cross, but the other bank is blocked by more fallen trees. The obstacle tests their nerve as they push forward.

A plane flies overhead and informs the rescue teams of the discovery, prompting a helicopter to be dispatched. As the rescuer lowers to grab Angus, Yellow is knocked off the tree into the river. He survives the fall and swims to shore, but is left to fend for himself.

Angus blames himself for losing Yellow but clings to the hope that his dog is alive. He keeps calling for Yellow and continues to search the riverbank as the rescue operation unfolds. Their bond remains unbroken despite the separation.

One afternoon, Angus blows his dog whistle and, exhausted, Yellow appears. The reunion brings relief and joy to Angus and his family, who celebrate the dog's return. The moment marks the end of the ordeal and the strength of their hope.

The McCormick family welcomes Yellow back into their home and reflects on the ordeal. They express gratitude for the rescuers and for Angus's resilience. The story closes with warmth, gratitude, and a renewed family bond.
