Thirteen-year-old Angus McCormick, Jesse Bradford, grows up along a windswept stretch of the British Columbia coast, surrounded by a close-knit family. His father, Bruce Davison as John McCormick, and his mother, Mimi Rogers as Katherine McCormick, keep a steady home while Angus helps with a daily paper route, learns practical wilderness skills from his father, and spends downtime with two close friends, David Finlay (David) and Sara Margot Finley (Sara). The days are layered with small adventures, quiet lessons about survival, and the bond of a family that understands the land as a teacher and a challenge.

One afternoon, a stray Yellow Labrador Retriever crosses Angus’s path, and he names the dog Yellow, forming an instant, hopeful companionship that will become essential on what follows. Soon after, a sudden and violent turn of events unfolds: Angus, his father, and Yellow are out on the rough coastal waters when a storm-tossed wave capsizes their boat. John McCormick is rescued by a helicopter and taken to a hospital for what appear to be minor injuries, but Angus and Yellow are left stranded, separated from civilization by a vast and unforgiving landscape.

The weeks stretch into a grueling period of endurance. Nine long days pass as Angus learns to ration scarce food, read the weather, and navigate the labyrinth of fjords, forests, and tide pools. The nearest goal is a lighthouse perched on a distant hill about twenty miles south, a beacon promising rescue and civilization. Driven by a stubborn will to survive, he resolves to reach that beacon across one of the province’s most expansive wildernesses, all while keeping Yellow by his side and maintaining hope that they’ll both make it home.

The trek is fraught with peril and small, quiet victories. Angus struggles to find nourishment for himself and his loyal companion, and at one perilous moment, he tumbles down a cliff, breaking his left wrist. Despite the pain, he keeps moving, guided by a stubborn belief that safety lies beyond the next bend. After days of cold nights and muddy boots, he finally sees the lighthouse looming on a distant hill set above a lake, and he conjures a plan to reach it: he builds a raft and, with Yellow paddling beside him, crosses to the far shore.

The lighthouse, however, is deserted, offering no food, no instructions, no immediate help. Undeterred, Angus scouts a logging road that winds away from the shore and hopes it will lead to people. A narrow gorge presents another obstacle— a river rips beneath, and a fallen tree serves as a makeshift bridge. He balances carefully, the timber creaking under his weight, as the opposite bank remains blocked by more debris. In that tense moment of effort and risk, a plane passes overhead, signaling rescuers and triggering a coordinated effort to reach the stranded boy and his dog.

A search-and-rescue helicopter is dispatched, and one rescuer is lowered to secure Angus. In the chaos, Yellow is knocked off the tree into the river, vanishing from sight. The dog survives the fall and fights against the current, eventually reaching the riverbank, but the reunion between boy and dog is not immediate. Back on the team, Angus bears the sting of guilt for losing Yellow, yet he clings to the stubborn hope that his canine companion is still alive somewhere beyond the water and woods.

Then, in a moment that feels both earned and miraculous, Angus’s persistent whistle cuts through the sounds of wind and water. A tired, exhausted Yellow appears at last, drawn by the sound and the bond that kept them going. The reunion is a quiet triumph for a family that has weathered fear, uncertainty, and miles of rough terrain. When the rescue finally arrives and the dog’s presence is confirmed, the McCormick family shares a moment of relief and joy, knowing that Yellow has returned and that Angus’s courage helped bring them back together.
