In 1989, Jack Toretto participates in a thrilling late model race on a short track, with his two sons, Dominic "Dom" and Jakob, assisting as part of the pit crew. Tensions escalate when Dom confronts rival racer Kenny Linder over his unsportsmanlike conduct. Unfortunately, during the race, Linder's car collides with Jack's, leading to a catastrophic crash that ultimately ends Jack's life. In the aftermath, Dom is arrested for violently retaliating against Linder, who he believes to be responsible for his father's death. While serving his sentence, he reflects on how Jakob had worked on their father's stock car engine the very day of the tragedy and begins to suspect that his brother played a role in Jack's demise. Upon his release, Dom challenges Jakob to a fierce race, putting his classic 1967 Dodge Charger against Jakob's sleek 1992 Ford Mustang Foxbody. In a decisive showdown, Jakob loses, and Dom insists he leave Los Angeles for good.
Fast forward to the present day, Dom has chosen a quiet life, raising his son Brian alongside his wife, Letty Ortiz. This peaceful existence is soon disrupted when Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, and Ramsey arrive with urgent news: after successfully apprehending Cipher, Mr. Nobody's aircraft was assaulted by rogue agents who abducted Cipher and forced a crash landing in the fictional Central American nation of Montequinto. Dom realizes that his estranged brother Jakob is somehow entangled in this dramatic turn of events and agrees to assist his friends. During their search of the wreckage, they discover part of an intricate device known as Project Aries, capable of hacking into various military computer systems. Their quest comes to a halt when a private army, led by Jakob, ambushes them and steals the device. Fortunately, Michael Stasiak helps Dom and the crew escape, and Dom's sister Mia Toretto joins them to lend a hand. Their investigation reveals that Han Lue is linked to Project Aries, which prompts Letty and Mia to travel to Tokyo for further insights.
Simultaneously, Jakob meets with Otto, his financier and partner in crime. During her captivity, Cipher divulges to Jakob that the other half of the Aries device is hidden in Edinburgh. Meanwhile, Dom reconnects with Buddy, his father's mechanic, who reveals that Jakob has taken refuge in London. In Tokyo, Letty and Mia are thrilled to find Han alive, alongside his ward, Elle. Back in the States, Roman and Tej venture to Germany, where they enlist Sean Boswell, Twinkie, and Earl Hu, who are currently developing an innovative "rocket car."
In London, Dom's path crosses with Queenie Shaw, who provides him with Jakob's whereabouts. A confrontation ensues at a gathering hosted by Otto, resulting in Dom's arrest. However, Leysa, an old friend, stages a daring rescue. The team joins forces in Edinburgh, where Jakob employs an electromagnet to steal the other half of Project Aries. Engaged in a fierce struggle against Otto’s crew, Tej and Roman locate the truck carrying the electromagnet, while Ramsey commandeers it to pursue Otto.
The stakes escalate when Dom and Jakob face off in an intense urban battle across the city. Just as Otto attempts to extract Jakob from the fray, Ramsey crashes into their vehicle, utilizing the electromagnet to immobilize Jakob. At their safe house, Han reveals that Mr. Nobody entrusted him with the protection of both Elle and Project Aries, as Elle's DNA serves as the device's activation key. When Jakob betrayed them and allied with Otto, they resorted to manipulating events to stage Han's death, all in a bid to safeguard Elle.
As Otto launches a satellite into orbit with unease, Jakob and Elle engage in the harrowing activation of Aries. While the armored truck traverses the streets of Tbilisi, Dom, Letty, Mia, Ramsey, and Han race against time to halt the upload. During their effort, Mia and Han attempt to breach the truck, leading to Otto’s shocking reveal about his collaboration with Cipher, resulting in Jakob being discarded from the truck. Miraculously, Jakob is saved by Dom and Mia, who then collaborate to gain access to the armored vehicle.
In a bold move, Tej and Roman employ the rocket car to obliterate the satellite, successfully thwarting the upload. Unbeknownst to them, Cipher orchestrates a drone strike against Dom, but this attack backfires, claiming Otto's life instead. Dom employs the ricochet from the crashing truck to neutralize Cipher’s drone, which is shockingly revealed to have been a simulation, allowing Cipher to escape once more. As Dom reconciles with Jakob, he shows mercy by allowing him to flee from justice and hands him the keys to his vehicle, offering forgiveness at last.
In a breathtaking conclusion, Tej and Roman reach the International Space Station and miraculously return safely. The film culminates in a joyful celebration at Dom’s residence, where the crew gathers for a heartfelt barbecue. Just as they prepare to say grace, a familiar vehicle pulls into the driveway, hinting at the unexpected arrival of Brian O'Conner.
