In 1750, Fanny and Meg are found by the French military, who hear their tale of turmoil. The commander is skeptical, and Will Smythe's alleged affair is part of the backstory. The discovery sets the stage for the fugitives' perilous flight.

Back at the settlement, Will Smythe is accused of an affair with two women—Eloise and Leah—sparking a murderous mood among the townsfolk. A mob gathers to execute the preacher and the women, but the rope breaks for Will at the last moment, sparing him for now. The dramatic incident triggers a quick exodus from the town.

Fanny, Meg, and several others flee the settlement to avoid the hanging. They join the group opposing the execution, gathering what they can carry as night falls. The escape marks the beginning of a long trek into the wilderness.

The caravan moves deeper into the frontier, with threats from hostile wildlands looming. The group includes Jewell Buchanan, Margaret Buchanan, Cathleen, Calvin, Sister, and Meg as they press onward. Tension rises as danger from unseen forces shadows their path.

Shawnee forces ambush the caravan along the riverbank. Calvin is killed in the assault, and Leah uses her supernatural powers to shield the survivors and keep them moving. The group’s resolve hardens in the face of sudden loss.

As the battle peaks, Eloise and Cathleen hide Meg and Fanny in a cabinet that is carried downstream, trying to shield the children from the spirit's reach. Leah drains the fallen spirit’s energy to save the remaining settlers, but Will dies in the process. The survivors brace for an uncertain future.
