On a quiet night that takes a sharp turn into fear, a woman named Marjorie is accosted at knifepoint by a masked assailant. He forces her into her car and drives her to a remote location with the explicit intent of sexually assaulting her. Marjorie manages a daring escape, but not before the attacker leaves with her purse. At the police station, she learns that without a positive identification of her assailant, little can be done: his guilt will hinge on her word against his, and the chance of any criminal charges is slim. The aftermath leaves Marjorie living under a cloud of constant fear, while the man she escaped from—revealed to be Joe—uses the evidence from her purse to pinpoint her address and even sifts through mail at the home she shares with roommates Pat and Terry to glean more details about their lives.

One morning, with Pat and Terry away at work, Joe casually enters the home, claiming he’s searching for someone who owes him money. Marjorie recognizes him instantly and tries to flee, but he overpowers her. What follows is a day of escalating physical and psychological torment as Joe keeps up a disturbing assault on her. During an especially brutal moment when he attempts to rape her, Marjorie manages to subdue him by spraying wasp repellent into his eyes, gaining a temporary edge in their struggle.

As Marjorie attempts another escape, Joe taunts her, insinuating that since the rape never happened, the police will let him go and that he will return to kill her. In a desperate move, Marjorie binds him and confines him in the fireplace, hoping to buy time or force his confession. When Pat and Terry come home, she tells them what happened and reveals her plan to kill the man who has terrorized her. Joe, however, tries to manipulate the situation, pressing them to doubt Marjorie and to see him as the victim. Terry, swayed by his lies and fear of escalating trouble, begins to question the consequences of reporting the crime, while Pat remains intent on a path that leads to the police.

Determined to force a truthful confession, Marjorie presses Joe to admit what he has done. He counters with a troubling claim that he and Marjorie were lovers and that she attacked him when their relationship ended. In a chilling moment, Marjorie removes the knife Joe had used and the stolen mail from his jacket, threatening him with castration if he does not admit the truth. Cornered, Joe finally confesses his broader plan: he intended to kill Marjorie, Pat, and Terry, and he also admits to raping and murdering three other women.

With Joe’s confession secured, Marjorie tells Pat to go to the police and urges a hesitant Terry to accompany her. After they depart, Marjorie returns to the fireplace, binds Joe once more, and stares off with a palpable sense of relief and hard-won triumph, having faced down her attacker and the terror he brought into her home.
