In Los Angeles, Slim works as a waitress at a busy diner, where a chance encounter with a wealthy man named Mitch Hiller begins a whirlwind romance. He protects her from a rude admirer as part of a bet, and what starts as a glamorous whirlwind turns into a marriage full of sharp contrasts: a beautiful home, a daughter named Gracie, and the sense that life has finally settled into something secure.

Six years pass, and the illusion frays as Mitch’s true nature emerges. Slim uncovers that he has been repeatedly cheating with seemingly little remorse. When she dares to threaten leaving, Mitch responds with violence, claiming that as the breadwinner he can do as he pleases and that he will not end the affair unless she chooses to fight him. He warns her not to walk away, insisting he cannot imagine living without her, which only deepens Slim’s fear and confusion.

Seeking support, Slim reaches out to Mitch’s mother, who offers brief consolation but also hints at a long history of abuse. Her best friend Ginny pushes Slim to leave and press charges, but the authorities offer little help, leaving Slim feeling cornered and increasingly isolated.

The decision to flee comes when Mitch taunts Slim, revealing he has been watching her and knows who she’s been talking to. Slim knows she must escape with Gracie. She enlists friends to help, attempting a late-night departure, but Mitch intercepts them, beating Slim again while menacing her companions at gunpoint. He’s forced to let them slip away only after they awaken Gracie, unwilling to expose his cruelty in front of their daughter.

Desperate and broke, Slim finds her bank accounts emptied and frozen, making it almost impossible to rent a new place. She tracks down a cheap motel with Gracie and escapes again when Mitch tries to break in. This time, she moves to Seattle to stay with her ex-boyfriend Joe, hoping for some stability and safety for Gracie.

Soon after, threats escalate in a dramatic turn of leverage and intimidation. Men posing as FBI agents descend on Joe’s life and threaten him, pushing Slim to seek help from her wealthy, estranged father, Jupiter. Jupiter claims he didn’t know about her and suspects she’s after money, and he struggles to accept that he could have a child he never truly acknowledged.

Slim and Gracie briefly seek refuge at a commune, hoping to buy time and safety. Jupiter eventually contacts Slim, revealing that Mitch’s criminal associates have forced him to take risks, and he offers financial support to help them start over. He sends a substantial sum, providing Slim with an opportunity to rebuild a life and an identity for Gracie.

The danger intensifies as Mitch tracks Slim with the help of a corrupt cop, Robbie, who had posed as the rude man in the original confrontation. Joe visits Slim in Michigan, but danger follows, and Slim narrowly escapes a violent confrontation in front of Gracie, only to drive away in a harrowing car chase.

A cautious lawyer explains that in the eyes of the law, there may be little they can do, and a custody hearing could be a trap to draw her back. Slim decides to disappear into hiding in San Francisco, sending Gracie away to safety while she begins rigorous Krav Maga training and seeks out help from a woman who looks identical to her.

In a decisive, desperate plan, Slim breaks into Mitch’s new home. She hides his guns, jams his phone, and plants fake letters claiming she wants to discuss custody of Gracie, then waits for him to return. When he does, they fight fiercely and Slim knocks him unconscious before throwing him over a balcony to his death. The police deem the act self-defense, and Slim’s actions mark the end of Mitch’s abuse.

Ultimately, Slim and Gracie reunite and start anew with Joe in Seattle. The story closes on their move toward a safer future, built on resilience, a fresh identity, and the enduring bond between mother and daughter.
