What Happens at the End of Eternity?
How Eternity (2017) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of Eternity resolves Joan’s impossible dilemma by distinguishing between the allure of a memory and the substance of a lived reality. Tasked with choosing an eternal partner, Joan initially selects Luke, her first husband who died young, drawn in by the romanticized potential of their unfinished story. However, she quickly realizes that their connection was rooted in youthful impulsiveness rather than the deep, established bond she shared with Larry. Her ultimate decision to leave Luke and fight for Larry signifies a rejection of the "what ifs" that plague us, grounding her choice in the identity she formed over a lifetime rather than a past version of herself.
Joan’s journey to reunite with Larry is not without consequence, as she must break the rules of the afterlife and traverse purgatory to find him. This act of rebellion emphasizes that their love is worth fighting for, even if it upsets the established order. While their final settlement suggests they may be "running" forever due to her violation of the afterlife's bureaucracy, the film frames this as a hard-won victory. Director David Freyne imbues the conclusion with a grounded realism, noting that while Joan made the right choice for who she is now, the "happily ever after" is rarely static; she chose the partner who represents her actual life, not an idealized fantasy.
Ultimately, the film offers a thoughtful perspective on romantic closure. While Joan and Larry find peace together, the narrative acknowledges that relationships continue to evolve and require work, even in eternity. The ending validates the importance of shared history and growth over nostalgia. As for Luke, the film refuses to frame him as a tragic victim, instead suggesting he is continuing his own journey happily, leaving Joan to embrace the reality she built rather than the ghost of what could have been.
