In 1864, during the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Quantrill orders twelve men to slip behind Union lines to disrupt supply routes and seize a shipment of gold. Only two soldiers survive the mission, managing to escape with the gold; one carries a gut wound as they flee. The survivors bury part of the treasure, and one writes in a diary after stabbing a tree with a knife.

In 1993, federal agents Cannon, Austin, and Midnite prepare for a drug raid but are interrupted by the team’s operation plans. They infiltrate a farm barn where hollowed-out watermelons conceal cocaine, triggering a gunfight with the dealers. Midnite fires an explosive crossbow arrow at a fleeing vehicle, causing an explosion that helps secure the arrest.

Chief Dickson arrives at the scene and chews the team out for ignoring regulations and conducting operations without a warrant. His rebuke foreshadows an internal investigation into their conduct. The raid's fallout hangs over the operation as the team processes the consequences.
