Endless Night

Michael Rogers is a wistful, aimless young chauffeur and aspiring photographer living with his mother in London. He comes from a working-class background but dreams of luxury and the fine arts. He spends his days driving for clients while nursing fantasies of a better life.

While photographing Gypsy's Acre, Michael stumbles upon a dilapidated Victorian mansion on a Devon coast plot. The place becomes a looming symbol of his future and a backdrop for his fantasies of building a perfect home. He begins to envision a life tied to this cursed-looking land.

During his explorations, Michael meets Ellie Thomsen, a young American visiting England who is immediately drawn to his fanciful nature. Their attraction marks the start of a larger plan involving the land and a dream home.

The elderly Miss Townsend warns Michael that Gypsy's Acre is for sale and that the land is cursed. The rumor of danger adds a Gothic undercurrent to the property.

Ellie travels through Switzerland and Italy with Greta, her German language tutor who acts as a personal assistant, during which she arranges a meeting with Santonix, the famed Italian architect, to design Michael's dream home. The trip deepens the couple's connection while weaving in the plot to secure Gypsy's Acre.

While in Italy, Ellie arranges the Santonix meeting and later reveals that she has purchased Gypsy's Acre. This news shifts the balance of power and anchors their future plans. The revelation cements Ellie’s control over the land they dream of developing.

Back in England, Michael and Ellie marry in Wales. Ellie tries to keep the marriage private, but it quickly becomes international news. Andrew's attorney casts a shadow over the union as he tries to buy Michael off.

Greta arrives and takes a secretarial job in London, gradually infiltrating the couple’s life. Michael grows wary of her presence, while Ellie warmly welcomes Greta’s help as they move toward the construction of the dream home. The household tensions begin to surface as mistrust grows.

Ellie vanishes while riding her horse on Gypsy's Acre, prompting a wide search. Her body is later found in the woods on the property, and an autopsy initially suggests cardiac arrest. Michael questions the official cause, suspecting foul play lies behind her death.

Ellie’s will designates Andrew as sole beneficiary and urges Michael to travel to the United States to manage her business affairs. Meanwhile, Santonix dies after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Upon returning to Gypsy's Acre, Michael sees an apparition of Ellie and, alongside Greta, begins a clandestine affair that forms the core of their plan to take Ellie's estate. The reunion fades as the dangerous double-dealing is revealed to him.

Greta and Michael expose their conspiracy and poison Ellie by lacing her allergy medicine with cyanide, aided by bee venom to ensure a fatal reaction. The murder clears the path for Greta and Michael to claim the inheritance.

An envelope postmarked from New York City arrives, containing date-stamped photos of Greta and Michael together that prove their prior conspiracy. The discovery ruptures their fragile alibi and heightens the stakes of their crime.

In a violent confrontation, Michael kills Greta in the swimming pool after the incriminating evidence lands in their hands. The act is followed by his confrontation with the police and Dr. Philpott, who question his role in Ellie’s death.

Michael confesses to helping murder Ellie during police questioning, and Dr. Philpott probes the mysteries surrounding Miss Townsend. The interrogation triggers a brutal nervous breakdown as he confronts the memories of his crimes.
