Ek: The Power of One (2009) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Ek: The Power of One (2009), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Nandkumar ‘Nandu’ Sharma, an assassin, and his getaway partner Shekhar are hired by Anna Mhatre, an opposition leader, to carry out an assassination during a major party meeting in hopes of generating sympathy votes. On the day of the hit, the target is shot by an unseen assailant, and [Shekhar] dies in a separate accident.

Nandu escapes and leaps onto a train, where he encounters Puran Singh, who is returning home to Chambela in Hoshiarpur after years away. In Valsad, the police spot Nandu and open fire, unintentionally killing [Puran] instead.

The killer makes his way to Chambela to inform Puran’s family of the death. The family mistakes Nandu for Puran and welcomes his return with warmth. As he settles in, he grows closer to the household, helps resolve many of their everyday problems, and unexpectedly falls in love with Preet Kaur. He also reveals his true identity to Guru, who has been a longtime friend of the family.

Meanwhile, Mahendra Kumar Rane, a CBI inspector, is assigned to the case of Mhatre’s murder. His investigation points toward Chambela, and he becomes suspicious of Nandu. Using a clue from Savte from a prison context, Rane traces a payment that connects Nandu to Chambela.

Nandu flees before Rane arrives, and Rane informs the family of Puran’s death. After the investigators depart, the villagers briefly believe Nandu has deceived them, but [Guru] defends him, recounting the positive deeds he has done for the family. Nandu returns and insists that he did not cheat them, choosing to live honestly with his new ties.

Puran’s grandfather tells him that, rather than fleeing after the crime, he came to them and helped, and thus he should be treated as Puran. He encourages him to seek justice. Nandu then reaches out to Joshi, a CM candidate, and records a conversation to use as leverage against him.

Joshi reveals a shocking truth: Shekhar is alive and had killed Mhatre, then framed Nandu and faked his own death. Nandu records the entire phone call as evidence. He tracks down [Shekhar], but corrupt cops are sent to kill them and recover the tape. Nandu overpowers them and defeats [Shekhar], who dies in the struggle. [Mahendra Kumar Rane] arrives and is handed the tape as crucial evidence. When Rane confronts Joshi, Joshi asserts that the court won’t convict him, but Rane warns that Mhatre’s son will seek justice when he hears the tape. Cornered, Joshi takes his own life, ending the case.

The narrative closes with Nandu immersing in Puran’s ashes, and [Mahendra Kumar Rane] explains that the killer died in an accident and the mastermind committed suicide, allowing Nandu to depart as Puran. He then heads back to Chambela to begin a new life, carrying the weight of his choices and the hope of redemption.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why was Nandu hired to assassinate Anna Mhatre when Mhatre was the one who hired him?

A.

Anna Mhatre, an opposition leader, orchestrated his own assassination to generate sympathy votes for his political party. He hired Nandu and Shekhar to carry out the hit during a party meeting, planning to portray himself as a martyr. However, on the day of the operation, Mhatre was shot dead by an unseen assailant, actually Shekhar, turning the entire conspiracy upside down.

The film hints early on that political leaders often manufacture crises for electoral gain.

Q2

Who actually killed Anna Mhatre if Nandu did not do it?

A.

Shekhar, Nandu's own partner, killed Anna Mhatre. He faked his own death in the accident, framed Nandu for the murder, and disappeared with the money. This double-cross was revealed when Joshi told Nandu that Shekhar had orchestrated everything to take the payout for himself.

Shekhar's death in the accident seems too convenient given how quickly the operation collapsed.

Q3

How did Puran Singh die if the police were chasing Nandu?

A.

In Valsad, police spotted Nandu and opened fire on him. During the crossfire, Puran Singh, who was traveling with Nandu on the train, was accidentally shot and killed. This tragic case of mistaken identity allowed Nandu to escape and assume Puran's identity.

The chaos of the train escape sets the stage for the fatal mix-up in Valsad.

Q4

Why did Nandu decide to stay with Puran Singh's family instead of running away?

A.

After Puran's death, Nandu initially went to inform the family. When they mistook him for Puran and welcomed him warmly, he stayed to escape capture. However, as he lived with them, he became genuinely attached, helped solve their problems, fell in love with Preet Kaur, and ultimately found redemption through serving the family rather than continuing his life of crime.

The family's unconditional acceptance contrasts sharply with Nandu's life as a fugitive.

Q5

How did CBI Inspector Rane trace Nandu to the village of Chambela?

A.

Rane used a clue from Savte, who had mentored Nandu and Shekhar in prison. Savte provided information that led Rane to trace the payment made to Nandu for the assassination. This payment trail connected Nandu to Chambela, where Rane ultimately found him living under Puran's identity.

Savte's mention of the payment in prison becomes the thread Rane follows.

Q6

What was the recording that Nandu made with Joshi?

A.

Nandu recorded a phone conversation with Joshi, a chief minister candidate who was part of the political conspiracy behind Mhatre's assassination. In the call, Joshi revealed that Shekhar was alive and had killed Mhatre, then framed Nandu. Nandu used this recording as leverage to expose the entire conspiracy.

Nandu's decision to record Joshi signals his shift from running to fighting back.

Q7

Why did Joshi take his own life when confronted with the recording?

A.

When Rane confronted Joshi with the incriminating recording, Joshi claimed the court would never convict him. However, Rane warned that Mhatre's son would seek justice once he heard the tape. Cornered with no way out and facing inevitable exposure of the conspiracy, Joshi committed suicide to end the case.

Joshi's earlier confidence crumbles the moment he realizes the evidence cannot be suppressed.

Q8

Why did Shekhar fake his death and frame Nandu for Mhatre's murder?

A.

Shekhar plotted to steal the entire payment for himself. He killed Mhatre, faked his own death in the accident, and let Nandu take the blame for the assassination. This allowed Shekhar to disappear with the money while Nandu became the prime suspect, effectively eliminating his partner and taking the reward.

Shekhar's sudden death seems oddly timed given the operation's failure.

Q9

What happened to Nandu at the end of the movie?

A.

After the investigation concluded, Inspector Rane told the family that the killer died in an accident and the mastermind committed suicide. This allowed Nandu to leave as Puran Singh. He immersed Puran's ashes, symbolizing his acceptance of his new identity, then returned to Chambela to begin a new life with the family, carrying both his past crimes and his hope for redemption.

Puran's grandfather's advice to seek justice rather than flee sets the stage for Nandu's decision to face the truth.

Q10

Why did Puran's grandfather accept Nandu as part of the family despite knowing the truth?

A.

Puran's grandfather reasoned that Nandu, after committing a crime, could have run away but instead came to their village and genuinely helped solve their problems. He told Nandu that by staying and caring for the family, he had become like Puran and should seek justice rather than flee. This acceptance gave Nandu the chance at redemption.

The grandfather's wisdom about redemption emerges from his observation of Nandu's genuine transformation.

Q11

Did Nandu face any legal consequences for killing Anna Mhatre?

A.

No, Nandu was not charged because the official story stated that the killer (Shekhar) died in an accident and the mastermind (Joshi) committed suicide. This allowed Nandu to walk free as Puran Singh. However, he now lives with the moral weight of his past actions and the guilt of the life he left behind.

The film's ending prioritizes Nandu's personal redemption over legal justice.
