Twinkie, Sabrina Jie-A-Fa, is the nickname of Vivian Harris, an Asian American girl adopted by white parents who dreams of becoming an animator in suburban Florida. Her best friend, Egghead, Louis Tomeo, is a nerdy senior who plans to attend Stanford University in the fall. He lives across the street from Twinkie and has carried a quiet crush on her since elementary school.
In the waning weeks of summer, Egghead summons the courage to act on his long-standing crush and tries to kiss Twinkie. She rebuffs him, and then comes out to him. Egghead, Louis Tomeo, reluctantly absorbs the revelation and vows to support her, even as the news unsettles their easy friendship. When Twinkie attempts to come out to her parents, her dad—J. Scott Browning—refuses to acknowledge her truth, sparking a tense argument that leaves her feeling misunderstood and alone. Seeking a path to clarity, Twinkie decides to run away for a few days to meet her online love interest, BD, Ayden Lee, a lesbian DJ living in Texas. She convinces Egghead to drive her there, insisting she wants to visit an animation studio in Dallas.
The road trip quickly exposes fractures in their plans. On the way, Egghead discovers more about BD and feels a sting of jealousy and betrayal, leading to sharp words between them. Twinkie, overwhelmed by mixed emotions, drives off and abandons Egghead at a motel. A misstep follows when she ends up traveling in the wrong direction, driving forty miles past the intended route before her car breaks down on the roadside. Desperate for help, she seeks refuge in a quiet Chinese restaurant where she encounters Jess, Asahi Hirano, an awkward bisexual waitress who carries her own stories of queerness and belonging. The two strike up a quiet, hopeful bond as they share experiences common to queer Asian Americans, finding in each other a sense of kinship and understanding.
After saying goodbye to Jess, Twinkie returns to the motel to reunite with Egghead, and the pair stops at a diner where Twinkie offers a heartfelt apology for abandoning him and fills in everything he missed during the hours apart. A playful, failed attempt at dining-and-dashing gives way to a more grounded night as they finally reach the nightclub where BD is DJ-ing. Twinkie arrives with high hopes, but BD ends the budding connection by breaking up with her over the phone without ever meeting face-to-face. That night, Twinkie opens up about her deepest doubts and fears while she believes Egghead is asleep beside her. The following morning brings a new sense of purpose: Egghead encourages Twinkie to explore a potential relationship with Jess, signaling a shift from rivalry or longing to a genuine ally who wants the best for his friend. With Egghead’s support, Twinkie stops by the Chinese restaurant to see Jess again and begins to sense a real spark between them, leaving the door open to a future that respects her identity, her art, and the friendships that helped her navigate a complicated summer.
