East Side Sushi

Juana is a determined single mother living in East Oakland, California. She balances her responsibilities as a parent while caring for her widowed father and managing various jobs to make ends meet.

Juana helps manage her father's fruit cart, showcasing her impressive skills in slicing and dicing. However, this era is marred by a traumatic event when she is robbed while working there.

After the robbery, Juana gets an opportunity to work as a sous chef at a Japanese restaurant called Osaka. This job ignites her passion for sushi, leading her to develop her unique style and signature dishes.

Inspired by her new role, Juana sets her sights on the 'Champions of Sushi' competition with a grand prize of $20,000. Her determination to succeed drives her to practice diligently in the kitchen.

When a sushi chef unexpectedly leaves, Juana is given a chance to showcase her culinary skills. Her talent impresses Aki, a seasoned sushi chef, who begins to mentor her in the art of sushi making.

Despite her talent, Juana faces challenges when Mr. Yoshida, the restaurant’s owner, refuses to promote her to sushi chef. His decision stems from traditional views regarding gender and ethnicity, leaving Juana frustrated.

Feeling disheartened by the discrimination she faces, Juana decides to quit her job at Osaka. She takes a job at a nearby car wash, trying to regroup and reconsider her dreams.

Juana’s persistence pays off when she is announced as one of four finalists in the televised 'Champions of Sushi' competition. Elated, she shares the news with Aki during a fun date filled with delicious food.

As Juana competes, her former colleagues watch her on TV, providing both a source of motivation and pressure. She pours her heart and soul into the competition, striving to prove her worth.
