Dum Laga Ke Haisha

Prem Prakash Tiwari, a young video cassette shop owner in Haridwar, joins a nationalist organization that prizes abstinence. The group's expectation is that members avoid using their married life for personal indulgence in favor of national service. This ethical stance foreshadows the tension in his later marriage.

Prem's father pushes him to marry Sandhya, an educated but overweight school dropout who is trying to become a teacher. Despite his reservations, Prem agrees for reasons of practicality and family support. The elaborate community wedding proceeds.

In a festive, community-wide ceremony, Prem and Sandhya are formally married. The event is grand and heavy with expectations from relatives and the nationalist household. Prem remains emotionally distant, masking his reluctance.

Prem does not consummate the marriage on the wedding night, signaling a rift between his oath and his new life. Sandhya attempts to win him over, but he is shy and embarrassed to walk with her in public.

Over their second night together, they share a kiss and have sex, but the relationship remains strained and emotionally distant. Sandhya grows frustrated with Prem's reluctance and their cold atmosphere at home.

Their branch manager advises Prem to focus on his married life and uphold the oath only as a personal discipline, not to abandon his responsibilities. The advice triggers Prem to re-evaluate his priorities.

Prem's close friend Nirmal marries, and Prem becomes consumed by jealousy at the sight of Nirmal's happy wedding and attractive wife. In a drunken outburst, he proclaims that sleeping with Sandhya feels like hell, causing Sandhya to slap him in front of friends, and he slaps her back.

The next morning Sandhya resolves that she has had enough and decides to leave Prem. The marriage appears to be collapsing, and Prem is left to reflect on his choices.

Prem channels his energy into studying for his English exam, but emotional turmoil overwhelms him and he cannot write a word during the exam. He ends up sending an emotional plea to the examiner, warning not to give him a zero lest his family fall apart.

Nirmal's father opens a music CD shop in the same Haridwar market, siphoning away customers from Prem's family business. The competition strains the family further and threatens their livelihood.

The two decide to file for divorce, but the court intervenes, ordering them to live together for six months to attempt reconciliation. Families on both sides voice reluctant support as they agree to give the marriage a chance.

Prem and Sandhya begin living together as a formality during the six-month period and gradually start understanding each other. Their initial friction gives way to small, meaningful moments as they learn to cooperate and share responsibilities.

Sandhya is coerced into participating in the 'Dum Lagao' contest, while the couple trains together and starts to re-balance their relationship. They sense that this could be their last chance to salvage the marriage.

On returning home, Prem is angered by his family's pretense about Sandhya's cooking and slips into a suicidal moment. A police constable arrives after a complaint linked to his earlier English exam letter. Sandhya's empathy deepens, and she secures a teaching job in Meerut, signaling a change in their lives.

Aunt convinces Prem to compete in the Dum Lagao contest one last time. Prem carries Sandhya to victory, and in the final lap she admits she doesn't want to go to Meerut. Prem pushes on to win, proving their bond, and returns home to seal their love with a kiss.
