Richard barely reaches the lab and sees himself in a mirror becoming a new persona, Helen Hyde. His hair grows, his chest swells, and the transformation accelerates, producing a compelling new identity. He is terrified and fascinated by the change.

The transformed figure surfaces as Helen Hyde and convinces colleagues she is Richard's new assistant. She seduces the bosses, uses Richard's credit cards, and exerts power within the lab and office. Pete, Yves Dubois, and Oliver Mintz become pawns in her plan.

Helen meets Richard's fiancée, Sarah, and wins her over by presenting herself as an ideal companion. She persuades Sarah to move out of Richard's apartment, consolidating her control over Richard's life. The betrayal adds pressure to Richard to regain command.
