John Baxter and his wife Laura experience a devastating loss when their young daughter Christine drowns in an accident at their English country home. This heartbreaking event sets the tone for their journey and creates a deep rift in their emotional lives.

Following Christine's death, John and Laura travel to Venice where John has a commission to restore an ancient church. This trip is meant to provide a change of scenery and help them heal, but the shadows of their past linger.

While dining in a restaurant, Laura meets two elderly sisters, Heather and Wendy. Heather, claiming to be psychic, unnerves Laura by revealing she can 'see' their deceased daughter, sparking a mix of hope and fear in Laura.

After fainting from the shock of Heather's revelation, Laura is taken to the hospital. There, she shares with John what Heather told her, which leads to an unexpected shift in both their emotional states.

Following Laura's hospital visit, John and Laura share a passionate night together, rekindling some semblance of their bond. This moment is short-lived as they still grapple with their grief and the mysterious happenings around them.

As they head out for dinner, John and Laura become separated briefly. During this time, John catches sight of a small figure in a red coat, reminiscent of their daughter Christine's last moments, which leaves him puzzled and alarmed.

The following day, Laura meets with the sisters to hold a séance in an attempt to connect with Christine. The session reveals a chilling warning from Christine, stating John is in danger and they must leave Venice, stirring doubts in John.

Later that evening, the Baxters receive an alarming phone call that their son has been injured in an accident at boarding school. This news compels Laura to return to England, leaving John alone in Venice to complete his work.

While working on the restoration, John has a close brush with death when the scaffolding collapses beneath him. This incident reinforces his belief in the warning from the psychic sisters about the imminent danger he faces.

Assuming Laura is in England, John is startled to see her on a passing boat in a funeral cortege. This sighting causes him to question her whereabouts and mental state, leading him to report her disappearance to the police.

John's report about Laura's disappearance raises suspicions with the police, who begin to follow him. As he searches for Laura and the sisters, the presence of a childlike figure in red coat continues to haunt him, amplifying his paranoia.

After checking in with his son's school, John learns that Laura is indeed in England. This revelation leaves him even more confused and desperate, particularly as the police have now brought Heather in for questioning.

Once back at their hotel, Heather falls into a trance and warns her sister to find John, sensing that something terrible is imminent. But Wendy fails to reach John in time, leaving him vulnerable.

John, driven by a compulsion to follow the figure in red, chases it into an abandoned palazzo. Confronting what he believes is a lost child, he is horrified to discover it is a malevolent female dwarf who then attacks him.

As John realizes the true nature of his visions, his fate is sealed when the dwarf slashes his throat. In his final moments, he understands that the warning signs he ignored were premonitions of his own death, culminating in tragedy.
