Don McKay

Don McKay, a lonely high school janitor, receives a letter from his former sweetheart Sonny inviting him to return to their hometown. He recalls being a suspect in a local murder years earlier and hesitates, but the lure of reconnecting proves stronger. The invitation hints at unresolved feelings and unfinished business.

Don accepts the invitation and is driven to the town by an eccentric cab driver named Samuel. The ride introduces a quirky, uneasy mood that foreshadows the strange dynamics waiting for him there. Don anxiously contemplates re-entering a life he left behind.

Don arrives at Sonny's house and is greeted by Sonny and her cold, distrustful caregiver Marie. Marie's aloof attitude signals trouble and a dramatic power imbalance in Sonny's household. Don begins to sense that the reunion may be more perilous than he expected.

That night, Don and Sonny share an intimate moment and rekindle their past romance. The tenderness between them contrasts with Marie's hostility and foreshadows darker motives behind the meeting. Don leaves the room with a mix of relief and unease.

The next morning, Sonny's doctor Lance Pryce arrives and confronts Don. A struggle ensues and Don kills Pryce in what appears to be self-defense. He hides Pryce's body in a bed of leaves behind the garden, then blacks out from an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

Don wakes in the hospital and comes to grips with what happened. Sonny visits and unexpectedly proposes marriage, claiming Pryce had recently spoken to her. Don remains cautious, unsure whom to trust in this tangled case.

Don seeks out his old friend Otis, hoping to bury the problem and move on. Otis agrees to help, but when they return to the scene the body is gone. The mystery deepens as suspicions rise and the living circle grows more dangerous.

Disappointed by the turn of events, Don goes back to his routine but soon receives another letter from Sonny inviting him to return. The messages keep him tethered to the town and to a plan he cannot fully understand.

Samuel reappears to pick up Don again, but they are intercepted by a man named Mel. Mel takes Don to a hotel room where it is revealed that he and Marie were plotting to kill Don and seize an inheritance. Don argues that there is no inheritance and questions their motives.

With Samuel in Mel's trunk, the group drives toward Sonny's house and forces Don to cooperate by wearing a wire. Marie threatens to go to the police about Pryce's death if Don does not play along. The tension escalates as the plan tightens.

Don hastily proposes to Sonny as they arrive at her house, trying to reclaim a sense of love amid chaos. Marie and Mel enter the home and confront Don and Sonny, leading to a tense standoff. The room fills with accusations and mounting danger.

Marie is killed by Sonny with a frozen ham during the confrontation, and Sonny calls 911 to cover the carnage. Don refuses to kill Mel when urged, and Mel is killed in the struggle with Sonny's improvised weapon. Sonny then reveals the inheritance deception and hints Pryce's true relationship to her.

Don reveals that he knows she isn't Sonny at all and that he had accidentally killed the real Sonny and two friends in a fire when he was eighteen. The revelation shifts the power dynamic and deepens the tragedy surrounding the reunion. Sonny then drops the ruse and reveals her real name, Joanne.

The police arrive and arrest Don, but Samuel's testimony and the evidence of the wire lead to his release. Samuel tells Don to contact him if he ever needs anything, establishing a fragile alliance. Don takes his number and prepares to leave town.

Don boards a bus back to his home, his future uncertain in light of the revelations and consequences. A wasp lands on his cheek as the scene lingers, echoing the bee sting incident and the unresolved outcome of his life. The film leaves his fate deliberately unknown.
