Ryan Richmond is a bright teenage resident of his family’s Holiday Inn in Arizona, an exceptionally intelligent youngster who still feels like an outsider among both his peers and his own relatives. His sharp mind offers him a chance to study abroad, a path that promises new horizons, but his parents are preoccupied with the upcoming wedding of their elder son, Jeff Richmond, to the daughter of a politician. With the wedding taking center stage, Ryan is left on the sidelines, which deepens his sense of isolation.

Desperate for connection, he turns to Lisa Winston, a lounge singer who works at the hotel bar. Their budding courtship is blocked by a large age gap and lifestyle differences, so Ryan finds himself navigating his feelings with limited support. In a bid to forge his own path, he experiments with a computer dating service. The questions soon grow odd, culminating in a revelation that the system claims he is an alien.
