Sadie takes control when the men threaten to strike and declares the island will never function unless she marries one of them. This is her strategic move to establish order and social structure among the survivors, using marriage as a way to consolidate power and create a stable hierarchy on the island.

Gibble draws the short straw but then attempts to back out in favor of Pat, revealing his internal conflict. Though he loves Sadie, his cowardice or sense of unworthiness prevents him from committing to the arrangement, and he、希望 Pat to take the responsibility instead.

Pat resists marrying Sadie because he recognizes their fundamental differences as a spoiled heiress and a ship's stoker. He believes their incompatible social standings would make a marriage unworkable, despite Sadie's feelings for him.

After being rescued, Sadie tries to convince the ship's captain to force Pat to marry her. However, before the marriage can happen, the rescue ship itself sinks from a catastrophe. Sadie ends up in the water and wades ashore at the same island where Pat has already arrived, reuniting them.

Gibble misreads signals between Pat and Sadie, believing they have become intimate. This misunderstanding fuels his jealousy and creates additional tension among the survivors, contributing to the growing disorder on the island.

Sadie initially responds to Carrol's affection with a kiss, but over time during the island ordeal, her feelings shift toward Pat. The dynamics of survival, power, and Pat's practical nature ultimately draw her to him, despite her earlier attraction to the journalist.

After Pat refuses to marry her voluntarily, Sadie attempts to use authority to compel him. She lobbies the ship's captain to order Pat to marry her, showing her determined nature to secure a marriage rather than accept rejection.

Pat finds a bottle of rum and drinks himself into intoxication. The alcohol impairs his judgment and adds to the growing disorder among survivors, as the intoxicating effects blur moral and interpersonal lines in their makeshift society.

Sadie decides to relocate to the isolated part of the island to live alone, driven by the competing affections between Carrol and Gibble that are disrupting the group. She hopes this distance will restore order and give her control over the social dynamics.

Carrol falls in love with Sadie and she responds with a kiss, but Gibble also confesses his love for her. This creates a tense triangle where rivalry and longing color daily life, threatening the fragile harmony needed for survival on the island.
