What Happens in Noel’s Fantastic Trip: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Noel’s Fantastic Trip (1983) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Noel (Iruka) is a young girl who lives with her dog Pup on Planet Noel. While resting, she notices the sun (Asei Kobayashi) seems too hot and proposes cooling it down with a treat of ice cream. The two climb into Noel's plane and set off toward the sun.

During the journey, they spot a faint blinking light. As they approach, the light resolves into the shape of a planet. They land, and the President steps out to greet them and invites them to a special party where Emcees showcase the planet's most beautiful designs. Noel explains that clothes don't matter; everyone is beautiful and loved, regardless of what they wear. This idea resonates with the President and the planet's citizens, who begin to shed their clothes as well. Pup nods toward Noel, reminding them of their original mission to the sun, and the two resume their journey.

Upon their meeting with the sun, it is grateful for the ice cream Noel delivered. The sun also warns of foul smog rising from an unknown planet. The two set out to pinpoint the source, but the smog surrounds them and they must escape.

They slip underwater onto another nearby planet, taking in the underwater scenery. They appreciate the beauty beneath the waves, but as they move deeper they notice some sea life has fallen ill. Sludge begins to form on the sea floor, signaling trouble beneath the surface.
