Doin’ Time on Planet Earth

Ryan Richmond is a highly intelligent teenage resident of his family's Holiday Inn in Arizona, and he’s an outcast among his peers. He navigates high school with little social support, though he has one close friend. His intellect earns him a chance to study abroad, a prospect tempered by his family's other plans.

Ryan's parents prioritise hosting their eldest son's wedding to the daughter of a politician, diverting attention from Ryan's possible study abroad. This creates pressure on Ryan and shapes his decisions.

Ryan asks Lisa, the lounge singer at the hotel bar, to join him at the wedding to avoid attending alone. Lisa refuses due to the age gap and their lifestyle differences, leaving Ryan without companionship.

Ryan uses a computer dating service. The questions grow stranger and stranger, and the service eventually declares that he is an alien.

Charles and Virginia reveal they are aliens who created the dating service to find others like them. They claim Ryan is their leader and that the coordinates to their home planet are locked inside his brain, unlocked by a sexual encounter. They also reveal that Ryan's father's rotating lounge is actually a spaceship they will use to return home.

Ryan is initially dismissive of their claims but begins to notice alien-like abilities, such as inhaling helium without the usual side effects. This makes him question whether they are telling the truth.

Determined to unlock the coordinates, Ryan convinces Lisa to perform a sexual act, hoping to access the hidden brain data. The act seemingly yields the coordinates: B52.

They determine the time to depart is the blue moon, which coincides with Jeff's wedding. This alignment raises the stakes for Ryan and everyone at the venue.

Ryan contemplates leaving with the aliens but ultimately decides to stay when Lisa reciprocates his affection. He chooses to remain rather than join them.

Aliens crash the wedding reception at the hotel's lounge, creating chaos as guests react and the band fights to keep playing. Meanwhile, Ryan's father manages to keep the lounge rotating, delaying any quick escape.

Charles, Virginia, and their followers countdown to takeoff, but the emergency brake installed by Ryan's father is activated, foiling their escape. The thwarted departure forces them to abandon their immediate plan and flee into the surrounding desert.

With their plan foiled, Charles and Virginia flee into the desert, muttering about the Taj Mahal as a new destination. The film leaves the question open whether they were aliens or delusions, and whether Ryan's discovery will ever be resolved.
