The film opens in the summer of 2008, introducing 13-year-old Chris Wang and his daily life with friends and family. Chris lives with his mother Chungsing, older sister Vivian, and Nai Nai, while his father remains in Taiwan for work. The summer sets the stage for Chris's coming-of-age experiences and social interactions.

Chris joins Fahad and Soup at a party hosted by Hardeep, where he feels excited and nervous about meeting his crush, Madi. During the party, Chris discovers Madi and her friend in a private room, leading to a tentative connection as she invites him to add her on Facebook.

Chris creates a Facebook account and chats with Madi, pretending to like a chick flick to impress her. Madi shows interest by giving him her number, sparking a tentative romantic interest, but Chris soon becomes too shy and blocks her on AIM after a playful game turns awkward.

Chris visits the skate park and films Donovan, Cory, and Nugget practicing their moves. He tries to join their scene by deleting embarrassing videos, and films their skateboarding, though his footage is often fuzzy or poorly shot. The skaters acknowledge his efforts but remain unimpressed.

While preparing for a night out with friends, Chris overhears his mother Chungsing and Nai Nai arguing about the house’s upkeep and Nai Nai’s fading presence. Nai Nai expresses sadness over her aging and not being there to see Chris grow up, highlighting family tensions.

Chris joins older kids at a party, where he drinks alcohol and consumes drugs, eventually getting high and hallucinating badly. Afterward, he vomits and is helped by Vivian, revealing the dangers of peer pressure and substance use on his summer break.

Nai Nai is found outside by Chris, having been out there for hours. She mourns her aging and impending death, expressing her fears to Vivian and Chungsing, which adds emotional weight to the family’s struggles.

The new school year begins, and Chris starts high school. He attempts to reconnect with Madi, apologizing for not responding earlier, but learns she is no longer interested after he punched Josh in a moment of frustration, marking the end of their brief connection.

Chris reunites with Fahad and Soup at school, where they greet him warmly during the registration for the visual arts club. This moment suggests that, despite setbacks, he still has friends who support him in his artistic pursuits.

The film concludes with Chris and his mother having a quiet dinner after she picks him up from school, while Nai Nai sleeps peacefully. This scene symbolizes a return to family stability, despite the ongoing struggles and the transition into adolescence.
