In the early months of the United States’ involvement in World War II, Lieut Gregg Masterman, Robert Taylor, enjoys a cushy posting as the junior aide to Rear Admiral Stephen “Old Ironpants” Thomas, Charles Laughton. After a misstep in giving advice to the seasoned Lieutenant Commander Martin Roberts, Brian Donlevy, the admiral shifts Roberts to command of a revived World War I–era destroyer, the USS Warren, and assigns Masterman as his executive officer. To keep the Warren running, Masterman teams with Henry Johnson, the ship’s civilian caretaker, Walter Brennan, who had once been part of the Warren’s crew and knows the ship’s quirks well enough to help him reenlist in the Navy and sail again aboard his beloved vessel.

Under Roberts’ steady guidance, Masterman gradually grows into a capable seaman, though the captain forever reminds him that the mission must come first and that personal concerns cannot override the needs of the crew. The Warren faces danger when a Japanese plane first attacks; Masterman’s inexperience leads to an error that prevents them from shooting it down, underscoring the high stakes of every decision at sea.

Admiral Thomas orders a convoy run from Honolulu to San Francisco, and when one escort destroyer breaks down, the Warren is pressed into service as its replacement. As the fleet forges ahead at flank speed through a heavy Pacific squall, Johnson suffers a concussion. Masterman chooses to ease the ride by slowing the ship—an action that helps the civilian caretaker recover, but blurs the line between procedure and instinct in the heat of crisis. Johnson’s delirium lingers, and he believes he is back aboard the destroyer during the war, clinging to memories of the Warren and its former glory.

Before the convoy reaches safety, the Warren encounters a lifeboat from a torpedoed vessel carrying two pregnant women and twenty babies, along with a small group of evacuees from a maternity hospital. The ship must navigate the delicate balance of duty and compassion, making careful choices to protect all those aboard while keeping the mission on track, even as births occur amid the chaos.

A second Japanese attack cripples the flagship’s steering; the Warren answers with a bold counterstrike. The battleship emerges from a fog bank and opens fire, but Roberts devises a daring plan: set up a heavy smoke screen, loop behind it, and launch a spread of torpedoes at close range. When the captain is injured, Masterman must assume command, while the recovered Johnson returns from sickbay to take the helm at a critical moment. Johnson’s presence steadies the ship as the Warren delivers a decisive volley, firing six torpedoes that strike the battleship’s magazines and destroy the carrier’s principal adversary.

Returning to San Francisco, a formal ceremony unfolds aboard the repaired USS Warren. Admiral Thomas presents Roberts, Masterman, and a recovered Johnson with the Navy Cross, the nation’s highest honor, awarded by the president, marking a recognition of courage, growth, and teamwork under pressure.

This tale celebrates leadership forged under fire, the perseverance of crew and ship, and the quiet strength found in trusting one another when the stakes are highest.
