Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis of Evil

This standalone entry reimagines the Ryanggang explosion of 2004 as a fictional explanation for the mushroom cloud over North Korea. After reconnaissance satellites detect a large, three-stage Topol intercontinental ballistic missile carrying a nuclear weapon in North Korea, capable of striking anywhere in the continental United States, the President, Peter Coyote, orders a U.S. Navy SEAL team led by Lt. Robert James Nicholas Gonzalez to destroy the missile and the launch site.

The mission rapidly faces the burden of clandestine politics. The Pentagon aborts the operation after new intelligence comes in, but by the time the order filters down, two SEALs have already parachuted into North Korea. James and the other man proceed, while the third SEAL hesitates; James intervenes to stop that third teammate from deploying, a chaotic moment in which the helmet on the status indicator is knocked loose by gusting winds and slams into his face. As the situation unfolds, Master Chief Neil T. “Spaz” Callaghan [Matt Bushell] disobeys orders to stand fast and, along with James, takes a radio and presses on. North Korean forces, led by Commander Hwang [Joseph Steven Yang], locate the pair, kill two of the SEALs in a firefight, and capture and torture James and Callaghan.

A joint rescue effort by South Korean special forces eventually pulls the pair free. With James and Callaghan safe, the President and the South Korean government decide to press ahead with destroying the missile site, deploying SEALs and SK troops to the area. However, radio contact is lost, and there is growing concern that the mission has spiraled into another dangerous engagement. Under pressure from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Air Force General Norman T. Vance [Bruce McGill], the administration contemplates using B-2 stealth bombers to destroy the launch site, a choice that could trigger a wider conflict with North Korea.

In a dramatic turn, Hwang nearly recaptures the SEALs and their allies, but a defecting officer turns the tide and shoots him. James and the South Koreans then destroy the missile silo with a covertly planted bomb, a move that prevents the bombers from ever taking aim and averts a full-scale war.

Back home, Callaghan faces a tribunal for striking an officer and disobeying orders—charges that are ultimately expunged because the operation was classified as a black op. The decision effectively frees him to return to his family. In a separate, classified meeting, James is honored for his actions, with his mentor Scott Boytano [Keith David] present to witness the moment. The film closes with a news report on the Ryanggang explosion, leaving audiences with the sense that the truth behind the incident remains guarded, even as a soldier’s resolve is celebrated.
