Dead Within

Mike and Kim reinforce their cabin after the outbreak, turning it into a fortress against the wilderness. They maintain a daily routine and use a rhythmic knock, set to familiar rock songs, to announce themselves and prove they are not infected. The knock becomes a strange ritual that marks their fragile line between safety and danger.

As supplies dwindle, chilling signs of infection creep in—dark irises, black blood, and growing paranoia. The sense that danger could come from any direction colors every choice they make. These signs heighten the tension and mistrust between them.

With dwindling provisions, Mike argues for leaving to hunt, while Kim clings to the safety of the cabin. They weigh caution against the hope of a better life elsewhere. The disagreement foreshadows the fracturing of their partnership.

A brutal memory surfaces of Todd and Erika, who once lived with them until tainted meat sickened them all. The couple and their baby had to die after consuming the tainted food, a traumatising reminder of the costs of scarcity. The past shadows the present as fear and guilt simmer.

Mike goes out scavenging and receives a walkie-talkie call from a man who identifies himself as Ranger Mark. The messages begin as something to lean on, offering help in a desperate time. But the tone soon shifts to abusive and misogynistic taunts, hinting at a hidden threat beyond the forest.

Kim hides the escalating menace from Mike, choosing to shoulder the fear alone. The isolation thickens as she realizes any ally could be a mirage in the empty woods. Her sleepless nights intensify the sense of encroaching menace.

An unproductive outing convinces Mike that the area has become too dangerous to stay. He proposes moving to the coast to live in a mansion with a generator and a chance of normal life. Kim is tempted but remains cautious, agreeing only in principle.
