Deadma Walking

John Samson, Joross Gamboa, discovers he has cancer and has a bleak prognosis—roughly one to two years left. Despite trying multiple treatments, his condition worsens, prompting him to share his fate with his oldest friend, Mark Caramat, Edgar Allan Guzman, a fellow theater actor. When John reveals his plan to fake his own death and stage a wake and funeral, Mark is initially horrified, but the idea of sparing John further suffering and the chance to give him one last adventure convinces him to help.

The scheme unfolds like a dark, theatrical dream: the two men would retreat to a resort for a vacation, John would “die” in his sleep, and a dead body would be staged to resemble him at a wake. Cremation would erase the body, and John’s ashes would be scattered at sea. John even choreographs the wake to feature rotating, ever-changing decorations, turning grief into a gaudy, festival-like display. As his condition deteriorates, John intimates to Mark that, should he pass, he intends to hand over his laundromat and water-refilling business to his friend, binding their fates even more tightly in this staged life and possible afterlife.

On day one of the mock wake, John makes his entrance in disguise as Yolly Redgrave, a transgender woman, drawing the guests’ attention and eliciting a chorus of eulogies from those who knew him. The mood is both tender and surreal, a commentary on performance, identity, and the fear of letting go. On day two, Mary, John’s older sister, arrives unannounced with questions and longing, and attempts to peek inside the casket. Mark manages to stop her, and in the commotion he faints, forcing them to lock the casket to prevent accidental exposure of the ruse.

Day three brings Luke, John’s best friend, who delivers a heartfelt eulogy that expresses gratitude for the friendship that helped shape him. In thanks, John—through his plan—forges a gift: a luxurious trip for two to the Maldives, a symbol of escape and shared dreams. By day four, as Mark delivers his own closing eulogy, another visitor, Joseph, arrives from the shadows. Joseph’s arrival triggers a confession of past misconduct: he and John had secretly been involved, an affair that John ultimately ended to avoid hurting Mark. The revelation strains, then shatters, their friendship, as the emotional weight of the lie and the real heartbreak of the trio collide.

The fake John is cremated, and Yolly—John in disguise—reaches out to Mary, confessing the truth. John then attends Mark’s stage production, a sign that life’s theater continues even as the lie begins to crumble. When Mark sends a text about the Maldives trip, John replies that he will not go without Mark by his side. A party with their fellow actors ends in tragedy when Mark dies in a vehicle accident, leaving John devastated and undone.

In the wake, Mary and John (still in disguise as Yolly) return to Mark’s world, where a video message from John to Mark is presented as a farewell. The blessing of Mark’s fashion-boutique inheritance—originally John’s dream for his friend—unfolds, and a quiet, somber gratitude fills the air. As family photographs scroll by, the voices of John and Mark converge in a final, striking refrain: “Once a diva, always a diva.” The closing image suggests that, in the end, their bond persists beyond death in memory, drama, and shared pride.
