In 1948, the life of Margaret Strauss is tragically cut short as she becomes a victim of a brutal robbery. Stabbed during the incident, her murder captures the attention of the media and the public, making headlines across the nation.

Margaret's husband, Roman Strauss, is wrongfully convicted of her murder despite his protests of innocence. Sentenced to death, he faces the grim reality of execution while grappling with the loss of his beloved wife.

Just before his execution, Roman has a pivotal meeting with journalist Gray Baker. In this encounter, Roman whispers something significant about Margaret's murder, but Baker chooses to keep this revelation secret, shrouding the truth in mystery.

Fast forward to the present, where Mike Church, a private detective, struggles with the haunting memory of a mysterious woman from his childhood orphanage. His quest to find her leads him into a web of confusion and forgotten identities.

Mike enlists the help of Fraklyn Madson, an antiques dealer and hypnotist, to unlock the memories of the mysterious woman he has named Grace. Initially, their attempts at hypnosis yield no results, leaving them frustrated and bewildered.

Madson proposes an unorthodox approach of past life regression, leading to startling revelations about Margaret and Roman's lives. Grace begins to recount their story, immersing Mike in a narrative that feels increasingly familiar yet distant.

Madson provides Mike and Grace with old articles from 'Life' magazine that document Margaret's murder. This discovery astonishes Mike, as he realizes the striking resemblance between Grace and the long-lost couple.

Mike consults with his old psychiatrist, Cozy Carlisle, who insists on continuing sessions with Madson. He believes that exploring Margaret and Roman's troubled relationship might be the key to resolving Grace's amnesia.

Complications arise when a man named Doug presents himself as Grace's fiancé, calling her Katherine. Mike's investigation leads him to uncover Doug's deceit, resulting in a confrontation that sends Doug fleeing from the scene.
