What Happens in DC Showcase: Jonah Hex: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of DC Showcase: Jonah Hex (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Set in the Old West, a ruthless outlaw named Red Doc Michael Rooker rides into a dusty local saloon, craving more whiskey and a fight. His swagger catches the eye of Madame Lorraine Linda Hamilton, a sharp-eyed prostitute who senses a clean profit in his bravado. She lures Red Doc upstairs while a frightened bar girl Michelle Trachtenberg watches from below. Just as they settle in, Lorraine murders the outlaw, pockets his cash, and orders two henchmen to dispose of the body—an elimination pattern she has used on many men before.

The next day, bounty hunter Jonah Hex Thomas Jane arrives in town, his disfigurement turning heads and making him an oddity in the crowd. After tussling with an arrogant young gunslinger who taunts him, Hex goes into the saloon to press the bartender about Red Doc—who carries a $5,000 bounty—but the bartender Jason Marsden insists he never saw him. The bar girl, the earlier witness, informs Hex about Madame Lorraine, a calculating operator who offers services only to men with money and then vanishes those men. Hex buys drinks for everyone in the room to draw Lorraine out and, when she appears, Hex steps into the upstairs space and deflects a bullet by tossing his hat.

Lorraine quickly proves herself a dangerous foil: Hex knocks her out again after a tense struggle, and the bar girl’s informant role helps keep Lorraine’s scheme intact as the bartender is easily gunned down when he tries to shoot Hex with a shotgun. Hex then proclaims that the drinks are on the house, signaling his control of the scene and his intent to uncover Red Doc’s whereabouts. He forces Lorraine at gunpoint to reveal Red Doc’s location.

They descend into an abandoned mine, where Lorraine leads him to a dark hole that opens into a caved-in lower shaft. Hex locates Red Doc’s body and, as Lorraine tries once more to stab him with a knife lodged in one of the corpses, he anticipates the move and knocks her out again. When she comes to, Hex stands outside the shaft with Red Doc, while Lorraine pleads that he can’t leave her alone. He answers with a harsh reminder that she already has plenty of companions—those she has murdered—before walking away. As Hex departs, Lorraine trembles at the sight of the many victims she has left behind; the single lamp in the shaft slowly goes out, leaving her trapped in the dark.

DC Showcase: Jonah Hex Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about DC Showcase: Jonah Hex (2010): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Jonah Hex leave Lorraine trapped in the mine instead of killing her?

Hex deliberately leaves Lorraine alive to face her own guilt. By trapping her in the shaft with the bodies of her victims, Hex ensures she experiences the psychological torment of being surrounded by those she murdered. It's a form of poetic justice, forcing her to confront the consequences of her actions rather than granting her a quick, merciful death. This choice reflects the story's dark, unforgiving tone and suggests Hex prefers moral retribution over simple revenge.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Hex reminds Lorraine that she already has "plenty of companions", the men she's killed, foreshadowing the lonely fate she will endure.

Q2

Why does Madame Lorraine murder the men who visit her?

Lorraine is a calculating criminal who uses her position as a prostitute to lure wealthy men upstairs, then kills them and steals their money. The bar girl explains that Lorraine "offers services only to men with money and then vanishes them." This pattern has made her wealthy through murder rather than legitimate business. She operates a kill-for-profit scheme, treating each client as a target rather than a customer.

Q3

How does Jonah Hex deflect the bullet with his hat?

When Lorraine attempts to shoot Hex from upstairs, he throws his hat upward at the precise moment she fires. The hat intercepts or deflects the bullet, which is a survival tactic that showcases Hex's reflexes and experience as a bounty hunter. This quick-thinking move neutralizes her attack and marks the beginning of their direct confrontation.

Q4

Why does Jonah Hex buy drinks for everyone in the saloon?

Hex uses the drinks as a strategic move to draw Lorraine out of hiding. By paying for everyone's drinks and declaring "the drinks are on the house," Hex asserts control over the entire saloon and forces Lorraine to reveal herself. It's a power play that shifts the atmosphere from casual to tense, making it impossible for Lorraine to stay hidden while still maintaining a facade of hospitality.

Q5

Why does the bartender get killed in the saloon?

The bartender is killed because he tries to help Lorraine by shooting Hex with a shotgun. While Hex interrogates Lorraine at gunpoint, the bartender attempts an ambush from behind the bar. Hex easily dispatches him in the ensuing violence. The bartender's loyalty to Lorraine's operation, and his willingness to kill to protect her scheme, makes him a target in Hex's pursuit of the truth about Red Doc.

Q6

How does Hex locate Red Doc's body in the abandoned mine?

Hex forces Lorraine at gunpoint to reveal Red Doc's location. Under the threat of his weapon, she leads him to an abandoned mine and specifically to a dark hole that opens into a caved-in lower shaft. While Hex could have simply demanded the location, Lorraine's physical presence ensures she cannot lie about the direction, she must guide him directly to the body she hidden.

Q7

Why does Lorraine try to stab Hex with a knife from one of the corpses?

In the final confrontation inside the mine shaft, Lorraine makes one last desperate attempt to kill Hex by grabbing a knife lodged in one of the bodies she previously killed. She uses the darkness and the proximity to the corpses as a weapon, trying to stab him from hiding. It's a grim reminder that she is willing to use any means, including the tools of her past crimes, to survive.

What does the lamp going out symbolize at the end?

The single lamp in the mine shaft going out represents Lorraine's complete downfall and isolation. Trapped in darkness with the bodies of her victims, she is left alone with the literal and metaphorical weight of her crimes. The darkness signifies that there is no escape from her past, she will be haunted by the people she killed, just as Hex promised when he reminded her she has "plenty of companions."
