On the run after a bank robbery, Rick Largo pressures Frank Banner to shoot Frank's own brother John so they can split the loot two ways. Johnny, the target’s brother, pretends to be dead to mislead pursuers. The plot sows betrayal and violence that will drive the rest of the story.

The overdue Mile High line stage arrives with the driver and horses shot full of Cheyenne arrows, and all passengers dead. Undaunted, Amy insists on taking the stage anyway and convinces Johnny to drive and hitch his newly purchased horse to the rig. The journey to Laramie becomes a grim test of endurance.

New passengers join the ride

On the stage, four other passengers ride along: Senator Blakeley, Carter Hamilton, Mark Chester, and Minstrel; Giselle, Amy’s maid, declines to accompany them. The uneasy group forms a microcosm of tension, motives, and potential conflict. Amy’s mission remains the central thread that binds them together for now.

Water returns and Hamilton dies

With Hamilton near death, Johnny risks his life to retrieve a water canteen planted by the Indians as a lure, only to find it dry. Rain begins to fall, the gully fills with water, and Amy discovers Hamilton is dead. The harsh environment seals many fates as the journey nears its end.

The final mercy and gift

An Indian survivor attacks Johnny with a knife, but Johnny spares him and urges him to return to his people and report the mercy shown. Johnny vows to honor Hamilton’s wish by clearing his name and returning the money, while Amy, chastened, embraces him. The spared Indian brings two horses as a gift and walks back to his people, saying that is part of the gift.
