On the run after a bank robbery, Rick Largo pressures Frank Banner to shoot Frank's own brother John so they can split the loot two ways. Johnny, the target’s brother, pretends to be dead to mislead pursuers. The plot sows betrayal and violence that will drive the rest of the story.

Johnny reaches Christian Flats and challenges Frank to a duel, despite Frank’s insistence that Largo fired the shot. Frank misses, and Johnny spares his life, telling him to get out of town. The tense encounter marks the first direct clash stemming from the ruse.

Johnny then faces Largo in a follow-up shootout and Largo is killed. With his revenge momentarily achieved, Johnny presses on toward Laramie to complete his journey. The violence leaves a grim imprint on the road ahead.

Amy Clarke resolves to reach Laramie to recover $27,700 stolen from her in Abilene by a crooked agent and former sweetheart. She bribes the clerk with one of her scented garters to secure a seat on the next stage. Her determination sets her on a perilous path alongside the outlaws.

The overdue Mile High line stage arrives with the driver and horses shot full of Cheyenne arrows, and all passengers dead. Undaunted, Amy insists on taking the stage anyway and convinces Johnny to drive and hitch his newly purchased horse to the rig. The journey to Laramie becomes a grim test of endurance.

On the stage, four other passengers ride along: Senator Blakeley, Carter Hamilton, Mark Chester, and Minstrel; Giselle, Amy’s maid, declines to accompany them. The uneasy group forms a microcosm of tension, motives, and potential conflict. Amy’s mission remains the central thread that binds them together for now.

The group stops to look for water and discovers Frank’s corpse in a waterhole pierced with Cheyenne arrows. Johnny then reveals to the group that Frank is his kid brother, deepening the personal stakes for the survivors. The revelation shifts loyalties and intensifies the group’s dynamics.

A broken wheel forces the stage to wreck, and the horses bolt. The passengers take refuge in a dry creek gully as Cheyenne attack; Chester is killed and his bag of fool’s gold is left behind. The siege marks a turning point as the group fights for survival.

Hamilton and Johnny decide to steal one of the Indians’ horses to seek help; Hamilton is wounded, and Johnny shoots an attacking Indian, but the horses escape. The desperate effort underlines the peril surrounding every decision. The group’s hopes for rescue fade as supplies dwindle.

Blakeley tries to prove pacifism by approaching the Indians with open arms, but is shot dead, his death underscoring the harsh reality that words cannot quell violence. Amy and the others are left to reckon with his misguided ideals. The tactless confidence in peace proves fatal in the moment of crisis.

With Hamilton near death, Johnny risks his life to retrieve a water canteen planted by the Indians as a lure, only to find it dry. Rain begins to fall, the gully fills with water, and Amy discovers Hamilton is dead. The harsh environment seals many fates as the journey nears its end.

An Indian survivor attacks Johnny with a knife, but Johnny spares him and urges him to return to his people and report the mercy shown. Johnny vows to honor Hamilton’s wish by clearing his name and returning the money, while Amy, chastened, embraces him. The spared Indian brings two horses as a gift and walks back to his people, saying that is part of the gift.
