Roughly a decade after the Civil War, veteran Jeb McAllister Donald Cerrone and his wife Hattie McAllister Gina Carano struggle to raise their adolescent son Will Rhys Becker and infant daughter Bess McAllister Emmalee Banthem in the rugged wilds of Montana. Hattie is tired of the drudgery of frontier life and yearns to return east to her parents’ land, while Jeb dreams of self-reliance and the ability to provide for their family on their own. After Jeb heads into town to find work to fund travel, four strangers arrive seeking food and water, their presence turning the quiet homestead tense and dangerous. Soon, Hattie discovers human scalps tied to the strangers’ saddles and fires a warning with a shotgun, forcing the intruders to retreat.
But the outlaws, led by The Captain Nick Searcy, do not go far. What begins as a standoff quickly escalates as the men repeatedly attempt to break into the McAllister cabin, only to be foiled by Hattie and Will, with one outlaw killed in the process. As night falls, Hattie realizes the reason the gang won’t leave is that they’re not just here for theft—they want to capture Jeb to use Hattie and their children as bait. Back in town, Jeb—having spent the evening drinking in a saloon and noticing wanted posters—recognizes the men from his past during the war and rushes back to the cabin, only to find it burned to the ground. He fights his way through chaos to help his family slip away into the wilderness, while Will hides with his baby sister.
The family’s refuge is short-lived. Will manages to stay hidden, but Hattie is captured, and Jeb is dragged back to the scorched cabin with the others. The Captain, revealed to be Jeb’s former Confederate commander, intends to make the family pay for betraying him during the war and for the death of his daughter at the hands of Jeb’s unit. The trio faces a chilling lynching as the plan unfolds. In a desperate turn, Hattie uses a hidden knife to kill a would-be rapist and frees herself, then steps outside with a rifle in hand. A brief, brutal shoot-out erupts: Hattie eliminates the Captain, and Jeb kills the remaining outlaw, breaking the back of the assault.
In the aftermath, the McAllister family faces the long road ahead with resilience. They rebuild their cabin, funding their return to security and independence thanks to the bounty placed on the dead outlaws—a stark testament to a family that chose to endure, even when the past had painted a target on their backs.
