What Happens in Crossplot: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Crossplot (1969) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Gary Fenn, Roger Moore, is an advertising executive in a bustling London agency who maps out a meticulous plan to identify the perfect target and orchestrate events so that only one girl will satisfy his boss—the Hungarian Marla Kugash Claudie Lange. He spots her among the anti-war movement in the bohemian depths of Swinging London, where she moves in the company of a young man, Tarquin Alexis Kanner, whose protectiveness toward her borders on aggression toward Fenn and heightens the tension around their encounter.

The young Hungarian, an illegal refugee from her homeland, accompanies Fenn to a photoshoot, where she confesses she fears for her life and seems unsettled by the ever-present shadow of her aunt. Soon after, she is nearly killed, and she drops out of sight, leaving Fenn to go on the run himself, suddenly a suspect in a separate murder. His search leads him to a country house that turns out to be Tarquin’s residence, revealing an aristocratic side to the man who seems to stand in contrast to his anti-war rhetoric.

As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that Marla’s aunt is part of a shadowy organization intent on destabilizing the existing world order, willing to go to extreme lengths to silence Fenn and Marla. Their pursuit even includes sending a helicopter after the duo, escalating the danger and the clock they race against. Fenn and his ally manage to escape back to London, where they uncover the movement’s plan to assassinate a visiting African head of state in Hyde Park. In a tense confrontation of wit and nerve, they manage to foil the plot and expose the sinister scheme lurking beneath the surface of a world seemingly at peace, leaving a lasting impression of espionage, danger, and the high-stakes world of political intrigue in the city.

Q1

Why is Marla Kugash being hunted in Crossplot?

Marla is being hunted because she accidentally overheard details of a conspiracy orchestrated by her own aunt's shadowy organization. As a Hungarian illegal refugee living in London, she inadvertently learned sensitive information about the group's plan to assassinate a visiting African head of state. The organization views her as a liability who could expose their operation.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, Marla appears nervous at the photoshoot and confesses to Fenn that she fears for her life, hinting at the danger she inadvertently stumbled into.

Q2

What is Tarquin's connection to Marla?

Tarquin is an aristocrat who has been secretly protecting Marla. Despite presenting himself as part of the anti-war movement in Swinging London, he uses his privileged status to keep her safe at his country house. His aggressive protectiveness toward Marla when Fenn first approaches her stems from his hidden role as her guardian.

Foreshadowing: Tarquin's hostile confrontation with Fenn when Marla is first spotted foreshadows his deeper involvement in her safety.

Q3

What does Marla's aunt want in Crossplot?

Marla's aunt is a high-ranking member of a shadowy international organization dedicated to destabilizing the existing world order. She is willing to go to extreme lengths, including murder and helicopter pursuit, to silence both Marla and Gary Fenn, whom she views as threats to her group's conspiracy to assassinate a visiting African head of state in Hyde Park.

Q4

Why does Gary Fenn become a suspect in Crossplot?

Fenn becomes a suspect when Marla nearly gets killed and then disappears. The police believe he is involved in a separate murder that occurs during this chaotic period, turning him from a pursuer into a fugitive. This contrast reveals a complex character whose political posturing hides his privileged background. His involvement with the anti-war movement and protection of Marla suggests he may have conflicting loyalties or genuine reformation ideals.
