Back in Los Angeles, Kathy grows unhappy with suburban life and her role as a wife. She schemes to propel Bill up the career ladder without his knowledge, signaling the start of dangerous manipulation. Her ambitions begin to overshadow their marriage.

She deliberately causes a car crash with Alice Pope to get to know Alice's husband, police inspector Tony Pope, who heads Bill's division. The plan is to gain influence and a closer link to the boss, hoping to steer Bill's path upward. Tony notices what Kathy has done but chooses to say nothing.
