Zac is born on Christmas Day in 1960 as one of the Beaulieu brothers. He grows up under the watch of his father Gervais and alongside his brothers Christian, Raymond, Antoine, and later Yvan. A strong bond with his father forms early on, but it begins to fracture as Zac's nonconformity becomes more evident.

Gervais's discovery of Zac wearing his mother's clothes marks the start of a painful rift between father and son. Zac's growing individuality and nonconformity clash with his father's expectations. The incident foreshadows a long trajectory of strain within the family.

At the 1975 Christmas party, Zac shares a joint with Paul, Brigitte's boyfriend. Michelle tries to kiss him, but he blocks the advance to protect their friendship. Soon after, Zac learns Brigitte has returned to Paul, deepening his sense of restlessness and desire for new experiences.
