In the summer of 2014, Sophie Kessler, Zoe Lister Jones, a waitress and single mother, lives in Iowa with her diabetic mother Kristin Kessler and her son Garret. When Garret begins vomiting in his sleep, she rushes him to the doctor, who offers reassurance. Soon a rash appears that pediatricians, dermatologists, and psychologists cannot diagnose. Sophie starts to wonder if Garret’s illness might be connected to genetically modified organisms, and the fear of a hidden danger begins to loom over their everyday life.
Desperate for answers, Sophie visits a university science lab where her mother works and meets Serge Negani. She also encounters Peter Landell, who overhears her concerns and claims to be a university scientist, suggesting he has access to files that could hold the key to her questions. Believing there could be something to uncover, Sophie leaves Garret with Eddie and, with Peter, sneaks into the university using her mother’s keys. When they fail to locate the files, security guards reveal that Peter is not who he claimed to be—he is actually a janitor.
Meanwhile, Serge, who has been studying biotech chickens and GMO reactions in rats with a fellow scientist named Jacob, uncovers troubling data. He finds the dead chickens and sifts through Jacob’s computer for evidence, printing it and tucking the material into the trunk of his car. He tries to call Sophie, but she is shaken to learn that Eddie is an undercover cop working for Clonestra, a GMO company that owns a large stake in Iowa. After this revelation, Serge is pursued on the highway by two of Eddie’s associates, crashes, and is killed on impact.
Later, Sophie visits Serge’s widow to learn more and discovers that Serge’s grandfather—a farmer in India—grew GMO corn with seeds supplied by Clonestra, a choice that contributed to crop failures and spurred farmers to protest with suicides. Backed by new resolve, Sophie retrieves the incriminating documents from a scrap-metal yard and brings them to Clonestra with Eddie’s help. The CEO resigns, aided by Kristin posting a YouTube message explaining why GM foods should be labeled.
Some time later, Sophie and her family—Garret, Kristin, Eddie, and Eddie’s son Tommy Kessler—go to a football game. As they watch people eat familiar stadium snacks, Sophie experiences a surge of anxiety, her heart pounding as she confronts the broader implications of the controversy surrounding GM foods and the choices that affect her world.
