Bobby, a compulsive gambler, finds himself ensnared in a relentless cycle of debt and dependency, leaving his mother, Audrey, in despair. Overwhelmed by the ghost of her husband’s destructive addiction, she bears the burden of her son’s actions, as Bobby struggles to balance his self-destructive habits with the mounting financial pressures of caring for her. Her escalating medical expenses serve as a constant reminder of his father’s tragic choices. Bobby’s social sphere is predominantly centered on Kim, a waitress at Chips’ gaming hall, where he wrestles with the enticing lure of high-stakes poker games.
As Bobby’s losing streak intensifies, driving him further into debt and despair, his friend Ben proposes a daring scheme: to enter a clandestine high-stakes game orchestrated by Turk, a well-to-do gambler famed for his lavish lifestyle. Believing that the bankers will fall easily into their trap, Bobby and Ben resort to stealing a car to gather enough funds for the buy-in. Yet, as their plans unfold, desperation compels Bobby to resort to an unthinkable act—stealing his mother’s life savings.
At Turk’s game, Bobby initially savors the advantage of having Chips vouch for him, envisioning a straightforward path to victory. However, this anticipation quickly morphs into frustration when he faces another adept player. Despite their best efforts, Chips and Bobby rapidly eliminate the bankers, but the atmosphere shifts dramatically when Turk unveils a suitcase brimming with $250,000. In an astonishing turn of events, Chips wins the pot without even glancing at his cards, igniting a smoldering resentment within Bobby.
Upon returning home, Bobby is met with a blistering admonishment from his mother, who, unable to tolerate his reckless behavior any longer, kicks him out after he expresses remorse. In his moment of desperation, he seeks comfort from Kim, who insists he get his life back on track if they are to move forward in their relationship.
Disillusioned with his dead-end factory job, Bobby finds himself swayed by Ben into a venture that poses even greater risks: robbing Turk’s monthly poker game. Though initially hesitant, Bobby finally succumbs to Ben’s compelling logic and the promise of a substantial payout. They concoct a brazen plan, arming themselves with shotguns and tear gas to seize what they desire.
When Turk proves unyielding in relinquishing the pot, Bobby and Ben threaten dire consequences against Turk’s child. Chips, frustrated with their alarming entrance and the surprise tear gas, ultimately opts to share the winnings, awarding each of them a $50,000 jackpot. In a gesture aimed at mending his relationship with his mother, Bobby uses his share to settle his debts and ensure she has access to excellent medical care, which includes an innovative new treatment. Meanwhile, Chips concocts a plausible alibi for Bobby, generating security footage that demonstrates his presence at the gaming hall, thus absolving him in the eyes of Turk. This newfound financial stability ignites concern in Kim, who relentlessly pressures Bobby to abandon any affiliations with Chips and embrace a more grounded lifestyle. Although he agrees, Bobby cannot shake the nagging thought of why Kim harbors such deep-seated animosity towards Chips. When he probes further, Kim reveals that Chips once confessed to cheating her former partner out of a pivotal financial opportunity, igniting Bobby’s fury. This resentment culminates in a confrontation with Chips, who promptly expels Bobby from the premises, leaving him with no alternative but to inform Turk of his findings.
The situation escalates as Turk visits Bobby’s home, seeking help in apprehending Chips. Although initially doubtful of Bobby’s claims, Turk ultimately decides to collaborate with him. As Kim, an aspiring actress with a penchant for theatrics, arranges a meeting between Bobby and Chips under the guise of settling their dispute, Bobby capitalizes on the moment, proposing one last high-stakes poker game. Convinced this is his moment to rectify past grievances, Chips finds Bobby taking command of the table. In a dramatic turn, Bobby emerges victorious just as Turk storms in, swiftly dispatching Chips’ crew with brutal efficiency. As the atmosphere thickens with tension and the arrival of law enforcement—a gunfire barrage cuts down Turk—Bobby seizes the opportunity to make his escape, expressing profound thanks to Kim for orchestrating the events that led to Chips’ downfall and his own liberation from the relentless cycle of deception and violence.
