Chintakayala Ravi holds the position of head waiter at a busy New York bar called Cyber Wave, where he works alongside three fellow waiters. Although he came to the United States with the goal of becoming a software engineer, life in New York prevents him from pursuing that path. Ravi continues to work as a waiter, masking his true ambitions with a practical, if unfulfilling, job. The tension between dream and reality fuels his character arc.

To spare her son's feelings, Ravi's mother Seshamamba tells everyone in their Andhra Pradesh village that he is an outstanding software engineer in America. Ravi keeps the lie going to avoid shattering her happiness, even though it’s clearly untrue. This deception becomes a central source of conflict later.

Seshamamba's deception leads to the arrangement of Ravi's marriage to Lavanya, a local girl, with Lavanya believing Ravi is a software engineer.
