Chakkikotha Chankaran

The film centers on Pradeep Thampi [Jayaram], a steady bank employee, whose life intertwines with a bustling, tradition-steeped family. His parents, Raghavan Thampi [Thilakan] and Subhadra Kunjamma [Sukumari], are deeply eager to see both of their sons settled and married after an astrologer warns that a grandchild is urgently needed, lest one of them face ill fortune. Their elder son, Prabhakaran Thampi [Nedumudi Venu], is passionately chasing his dream of becoming a skilled Mridangam player, a path that puts him at odds with his family’s expectations. In contrast, Pradeep aims for security and routine, balancing work at the bank with the quiet life he imagines for himself.

The tension within the household increases when Subhadra, weary of Prabhakaran’s reluctance to marry, impulsively attempts to take control of the situation—even to the point of contemplating drastic measures in front of her son. The moment of crisis pushes Prabhakaran to capitulate and agree to marry Shailaja [Geetha], a determined and capable woman whose presence will soon reshape the family dynamics. After the wedding, Prabhakaran’s disappointment with Shailaja’s every perceived fault sets a new rhythm to their relationship, as he finds fault in many small choices and habits that hadn’t seemed intrusive before.

One day, under pressure from his parents to charm Shailaja into a more harmonious union, Prabhakaran takes her to a movie. On the way they confront an episode of harassment by local rowdies, and Prabhakaran’s instinct to defuse danger clashes with Shailaja’s own readiness to defend herself. Shailaja reveals she has trained in Karate since childhood, a skill she uses to fend off the attackers, leaving Pradeep—watching in awe—grappling with a new respect for his wife’s strength. That night, a nightmare from Shailaja’s subconscious resurfaces as she fears for her husband’s safety, and in her sleep she momentarily lashes out, punching him. The scene subtly reframes their marriage, showing love and fear intermixed with mutual admiration and occasional unease.

Meanwhile, Pradeep falls in love with Roshini [Urvashi], and the couple marries in a temple in secret to avoid upsetting the family’s delicate expectations. Fate adds complexity when Roshini turns out to be an old friend of Shailaja, prompting her to move into the family home. Pradeep attempts to leave the house several times but is persuaded by his brother to stay, highlighting the strong bonds that bind the siblings and spouses together. Complications intensify when Prabhakaran hatches a plan to frame Roshini as a thief to force her out, a scheme that backfires and lands him behind bars, until the real culprit confesses and releases him.

As the plot builds toward its climax, Roshini is abducted by a stalker, thrusting Pradeep into a perilous rescue mission. The family rushes to the police station to secure their freedom, and the ensuing confrontation brings together the entire clan. Inside the station, a fresh wave of danger erupts when a group of criminals is dragged in and one of them seizes Shailaja as a hostage. In a decisive moment, Shailaja’s karate prowess once again comes to the fore, overpowering the armed assailants even as chaos erupts around them. In the tumult, a bomb explodes at the police station, but the family narrowly escapes unharmed, stepping back into each other’s arms with a renewed sense of unity and resilience.

Across its twists and turns, the film balances humor, family duty, and moments of quiet heroism. The interplay between the sons and their wives—Pradeep and Roshini, Prabhakaran and Shailaja—highlights how love can grow within pressure, how strength can emerge from unexpected sources, and how a family can weather a cascade of misfortunes by sticking together.
