Inglourious Basterds

Colonel Landa deliberately allows Shosanna to escape because he is calculating and strategic. As the "Hebrew Hunter," he wants to maintain his reputation for thoroughness while keeping a personal insurance policy, a Jewish survivor he can track later if needed. This sets up his later appearance in Paris and his ongoing interest in Shosanna's fate.

Landa makes a calculated deal with Raine because he sees the war's outcome is inevitable and wants to secure his own future. Shosanna teams up with Marcel, her black projectionist and lover, to set fire to her cinema using highly flammable nitrate film stock. They plan to trap all the top Nazi officials, including Hitler and Goebbels, inside the theater during the premiere and burn the building down with them inside. The nitrate film was extremely combustible, making it an effective accelerant.

The meeting at the tavern goes wrong when Sturmbannfuhrer Dieter Hellstrom notices Lieutenant Archie Hicox's suspicious British accent.
