The film begins with an advertisement showcasing the innovative Buddi dolls manufactured by Kaslan Industries. These dolls promise to revolutionize family interactions by integrating with electronic systems and adapting to daily routines.

A disgruntled employee in a Vietnamese factory is reprimanded and ultimately fired by his manager. In retaliation, he sabotages a Buddi doll by disabling its safety features before crashing through a window and landing on his manager's car.

The scene shifts to Chicago, where Karen Barclay is busy at her job while trying to connect with her son, Andy. Andy, who wears a hearing aid, feels increasingly alone in their new apartment, especially with Karen's boyfriend Shane around.

After a customer returns a malfunctioning Buddi doll, Karen cleverly negotiates to take it home for her son Andy. Upon activating the doll, Andy discovers it identifies itself as Chucky, marking the beginning of their unusual friendship.
